Technology Argumentative Essay on Social Benefits of Technology

Social Benefits of Technology

This is a globalized world where technological advancements characterize daily living. Such advancements have come from human being’s ability to be creative, interactive and explorative. Interaction between people across the globe has been made easier through technological advancements. Cultural and economical benefits can be pointed from the many technological practices in the world. Note that these technological advancements are developed in different sectors of the society depending on the need (Gasell 4). However, some researchers argue that embracing technology has affected lives of people negatively. These people look at the negative impact of the various technological innovations in life. As much as there some negative impact of technology, it is important to point out that benefits far much outweigh some isolated negative results of technology. This paper argues that technological advancement and embrace of the same has led to much benefit in terms of culture and economics. This work also takes a look at the different arguments presented in the literature concerning positive and negative impact of technology to the current society.

Major Arguments

It is important to look at the major arguments presented by different researchers on impact of technology to the current ways of life. Creativity of humankind has always led to the need to make improvements to the living conditions. Social interaction has been the major factor that drives technological innovation in the world today. This comes from the understanding that the world is a place with people having different social backgrounds, religious and cultural interactions (Saba 5). On the same note, human beings are always in constant desire to move around and interact with other communities. Technology has made it possible for quick movement and relocation of people to other places. It is important to note that technological advancements have made it transportation faster and more secure for those who require moving from one place to another. Proliferation of technologies has made it possible to overcome obstacles of time and space. Ease of movement has led to greater understanding of other cultures.

Technology has provided an opportunity for people to develop a common front towards communication. Communication is an important part of social interaction among people from different regions and language has offered an opportunity towards the same. Learning from each other has been possible through technology that offers an opportunity to have advanced a common language. From this, it has been possible to learn cultural beliefs and practices from other communities of the world. There has never been a better opportunity towards such interaction than what technology has provided. According to Gasell (7), modern means of communication like the internet and telephones have greatly revolutionized how people interact amongst themselves. He argues that it has become difficult to differentiate practices from different communities because technology has enabled the sharing and adoption of common cultures (Pertierra 30). For instance, most Africans have embraced western culture through technological encounters.

Some scholars allude to the fact that technology has not contributed to benefits to man, instead it has brought harm. Technology is seen as a tool that has made people abandon their traditional ways of life in order to adopt other cultures. Such oppositional argument points to the fact that it is people prefer to adopt other cultural practices in order to embrace foreign ones as learnt from technology. This leads to risk of extinction of people’s ways of life. However, such an argument does not capture the fact that a person can only embrace a given culture if the associated social interaction offers an opportunity to develop than the present one. Note that the world is socially changing and people must adopt practices that make them at par with the changes. In terms of cultural changes, it is important to note that technology offers an opportunity to adopt cultural values that are acceptable to many and in most cases; a new culture is usually formed from the merging of the former and new cultures. This removes the fear that technology is responsible for the loss of cultural values (Syed and Nurullah 4-5).

Opposing argument also identify gaming as another technological innovation that has affected social development. Scholars argue that gaming consumes many users, especially boys, making them socially unproductive. Such as an argument does not give the correct perspective on the issue because whereas some studies have shown that certain online games are socially unproductive, others are good. When boys spend most of their years watching violent games, they may develop aggression when they reach their adult period (Martin 2). However, an argument that all video games are socially bad may not be prudent because certain social activities lead to more harm to participants than these technological games. For instance, some games like football end up with worse social problems than gaming. Most of the gaming activities require two players, something that enhances relationship amongst the people. For this reason, gaming helps families spend time together while playing than with other people elsewhere. This does not mean that overindulgence in such an activity does not lead to negative social impact.

Mechanization of certain activities is another positive impact from technology. Food is a basic need for every living thing on earth, especially humankind. With the increasing population, there is need to have produce food on a faster rate. Mechanization of agriculture has made it possible for mass production of farm produce for consumption. This means that machines can be used to produce large quantities of food within a shorter period of time. It would have been very difficult to produce goods and services in quantities that satisfy the market without mechanization because of labor demands. Some researchers claim that technology advancements have been responsible for the growth in population since life can be prolonged by better healthcare facilities. This argument is advanced, especially in the developing countries. On the contrary is should be appreciated that most of the developing countries are the fastest growing economies in the 21st century. The unexploited agricultural and other natural resources have the capacity to continue supporting these populations for longer (Syed and Nurullah 10). Furthermore, technology is making it possible for the acquisition of knowledge that helps in planning families. Overall, technology continues to improve lives of people though the innovation of household appliances.

Education is a pillar for the success of any economy. Educational infrastructures must be put in place to enhance the capacity to comprehend and interpret information. Note that many critics have faulted exposure of the children to technology at that tender age (Martin 1). Such argument is countered by the integration of educational technology in learning processes in many educational systems. The correct of technology for educational purposes help the learners comprehend faster. Currently, technological gargets and services like computers, internet, smart white boards, projectors and ipads are used in education in order to enhance learning capacity. On the same note, distance learning has been possible through the technology because learners can easily interact with lecturers or teachers easily. This means that the normal day to day life does not have to be interrupted in order to enroll for a course being offered in a different geographical environment. In the long run, a parent is able to spend more time with the family while working and studying at the same time.

On the same note, education is seen as a platform where physical interaction is required. For this reason, the use of technology is seen as a deprivation towards social development though physical interaction with other students. For this reason, distance learning is seen as an educational means where total social development is not achieved because all the interaction is through technology. Many of the academic content can also be accessed from the internet, something that makes it unnecessary to visit physical libraries for research work. In fact, printed publications have are rarely read because of the online information. On this note, it is proper to put things into perspective because the previous paragraph notes that there may be a need to enroll for an online course. It is important to appreciate that we live in times where things are moving fast and all persons must keep up with the pace. Most of these people who enroll for online courses may be working and may not have the opportunity for study leave. Moreover, the need to be with the family is may make one opt for an online course. Therefore, lack of time for a full time educational system is a reason that leaves people with the use of technology. Distance is another issue that makes people to choose technological education because it is comparatively cheaper to learn and interact with lecturers through the internet than travel to far countries for education. Remember that issues of social development do not arise to such persons since most of them are either working and/or are family people with social interactions.

According to Ramey (2), communication gadgets have also been on the receiving end in terms of their negative impact to daily lives. Mobile phones have been developed to access internet in order to connect people who are far apart (Pertierra 25). Arguments arise that it is better to have face to face chats with people other than hiding behind screens while communicating. To the younger generation, phones are important gadgets used to check social media updates from friends. It is true that some youths spend most of their time interacting with their friends; however, not all interactions can be termed as negative (Ramey 3). First, it has become easier to do marketing on the social media without paying anything. People with businesses have a large pool of potential customers to trade with over the electronic media. Access to the internet through smart phones and other latest gadgets have benefits to the users. As noted before, the world has become a global village where people from different backgrounds interact. Therefore, it would be very costly to move to another continent in order to see someone or to find out about a certain product. Interaction through cell phones makes it easy to communicate while still accomplishing other tasks. In essence, it comes out that the use of technology helps save time while still maintaining social interaction with other people.

From the above information, it comes out that technology is part of life, especially in this 21st century. Technology turns out to be a pillar that helps in today’s communication, learning, doing business and comfortable living. Nevertheless, it is also clear that wrong application of technology leads to destruction of the social constructs of the day-to-day living and interactions. There are positive sides as well as negative sides of technology, just like a coin. Most arguments against technology point to the cultural elements associated with language, dressing and upbringing styles (Syed and Nurullah 4-5). These are notably some of the easier things that define cultures and people have the options to acquire them or not. However, technology is beneficial because it offers a wide space for interaction, learning and acquiring more skills. This space does force people to change their cultural beliefs but to embrace diversification. It should be noted that a change of behavior can only be motivated by certain factors as directed by individual choices.

In terms of the different technological advancements, it must be appreciate that life has greatly changed because of technology. It is like a fuel that drives day to day life and without it, life would be very difficult. From automation and ease of communication, there is proof that the society has benefited from technology (Saba 6-8). This does not mean that negative impacts are not recognized. However, it should be understood that the negative impact of technology comes from the wrong application. Such isolated wrong use of technology should lead to a blanket conclusion that technology is bad. Instead, more effort should be directed towards providing civic education on the use of technology and its impact to the social life. By this, masses will know how to apply each technology for the right use. Technology will still be needed as time moves; otherwise, life will be unbearable. This is a globalized world that must be driven by technological innovations in order to maintain the required development for the people. Indeed, technology is beneficial and it is required in order for the social and economic development to be achieved.
