The Leadership Motivation Assessment
Leadership skills play a huge role in individual’s career development. Individuals aspiring to become leaders should practice how to become good leaders, as few individuals are born with leadership traits. Individuals can discover their levels of motivation to leadership by undertaking the test on motivation to lead. The most essential part in leadership is to have the desire to lead since individuals cannot be compelled to become leaders. After undertaking the quiz on motivation to lead, my score indicated that I have a strong motivation to lead. Having a strong motivation to lead signifies that I am already a leader; hence, I can concentrate on building my career on leadership.
My strength in leadership is demonstrated through helping individuals to stick together during group projects. I usually encourage each individual in the team to come up with ideas that can enhance their productivity. I always take team’s problems as my own problems, and endeavor to search for the appropriate solutions in case of any conflict of interest. I ensure that credit does not go to an individual when a progress has been made, but to the entire team. I feel motivated when people request for my advice on matters concerning work improvement. This enables me to think beyond the box in order to offer appropriate advice to those who ask for my assistance.
However, my weakness is that I sometimes ask hard questions that may discourage others from contributing to organizational development. I also allow people to copy my own ideas, which they can utilize for their own personal interests. Celebrating the accomplishment of other employees makes me feel vulnerable and sometimes I feel envious of their accomplishments. As a leader, it becomes hard to please everyone through actions, especially when rewards are involved in motivating employees. Sometimes I may become overconfident and forget to consider those who are not active in their tasks. Failing to learn from past mistakes has taken a toll in my leadership skills, as some of the problems that I have encountered are not new.
Becoming a competent leader requires a lot of practice to enhance skills. Motivation results from persistent learning on how to perform better each day. My plan is to be determined to try something new and aiming at high levels to enhance my confidence, in addition to learning from mistakes. Leaders should endeavor to search for the right support systems, from either the role models or mentors, who can assist them to be at their best. Cultivating excellent listening skills can assist in learning from others and getting the right feedback from the teams. Learning to delegate duties not only motivates employees to develop new skills, but also to feel appreciated in their work places. Thus, as a successful leader, I should learn how to allocate duties to each team, rather than micro-manage teams.
A competent leader should aspire to lead with optimism. Optimism should indicate that I have a strong believe on whatever steps that I can take to enhance employees’ productivity. Gaining skills in conflict resolution would enhance trust that employees have toward my leadership, and this can be attained through listening to what employees are complaining about before coming up with the right decision. Negativity and fear destroy the winning mindset, in addition to encouraging poor organizational culture in the team environment. Avoiding open criticism is essential in correcting employee behavior; hence, I should work on counseling individual employees rather than summoning them in groups.
