Electronics and Their Impact on Health and Social Status  


Electronics play a vital role in individuals’ health and social status. Electronics have facilitated advancements in the healthcare industry through the development of devices, such as telehealth that enable people from rural regions to receive quality healthcare. Electronics also negatively impact health through the production of radiations that are harmful to human health. Socially, electronics enhance social interactions using Internet, computers, and television. Electronics have also made people to isolate themselves by spending much time on media technology. Individuals should utilize electronics appropriately to enhance their effectiveness.


Electronics is the science of regulating electrical energy by mean of electricity whereby electrons play a significant task. It is concerned with electrical circuits, which entail active electrical elements, for example, vacuum tubes, diodes, and interconnection tools. Usually, electronic tools have circuitry comprising mainly of active semiconductors complemented with passive components. Such a circuit is referred to as an electronic circuit. Currently, electronic gadgets are utilized by all nations in the world. Despite harmful effects, such as cancer and social withdrawal, they have enhanced the healthcare industry through technology-enabled care and social interaction through the Internet.

The Impact of Electronics on Health

Electronics have a positive and negative effect on health. Technology-enabled care (TEC) is a mutual word for telecare, telehealth, telemedicine, mHealth, digital health, and eHealth services (McGrath 2012). TEC entails the merging of health machinery, digital media, as well as mobile tools, and it is considered an essential part of the resolutions to various problems facing the healthcare segment, particularly in facilitating successful incorporation of care. Technology-enabled care utilizes connected, medical tools to produce good healthcare. Such devices include software, for example, medical applications, and physical components, including mobile diagnosis, distant examination gadgets, as well as wearable (McGrath 2012).

Remote monitoring (home-telehealth) applies technology in observing variations in the patients’ health status outside a natural medical environment. Advancements in the growth of bio-sensing wearables have increased their abilities beyond the tracking functions. Applicants can continuously observe a wide range of physiology (the position of brain activity) to change such data into output using enhanced connectivity and computing capacity.

Mobile technologies encourage patients together with nurses by allowing them to manage their health care needs. They also minimize the patients’ costs of contacting health care professionals for health details. Mobile technologies enable patients and physicians to explore information online, share feelings, discover treatment alternatives, compare providers’ charges, and identify diseases. Digital technology links patients and physicians, which result in better health outcome and more suitable and individualized services. Education technologies like apps, video, and texts are employed in training and delivering knowledge to patients and physicians. The widely used cell phone apps are fitness, medical consultation, and healthy living apps, which are educative (McGrath 2012).

Electronics also have adverse effects on health. In some incidences, over texting and swiping using smartphones and tablets cause physical strains, such as irritated tendons, thumb joints, and index fingers. Contemporary computing technology entails overutilization of our thumbs and index fingers. The physical strains of such long and recurring actions result in stress injuries.

Poor posture is usually an outcome of undesirable childhood behaviors. If children get used to poor postures, such as forward head, rounded shoulders, or hunched back, chances of carrying them over to adulthood are high due to excessive utilization of handheld devices like cell phones, tablets, and gaming consoles (Taylor 2015).

The unnatural light from mobile phones or tablet deters individuals’ pineal gland from releasing melatonin, which is a hormone that stabilizes the body’s circadian rhythm, majorly referred to as the 24-hour biological clock. Since the human brain relates light to alertness, it can interrupt the bio clock and make an individual stay awake even when it is time for sleeping, which disrupts the sleeping patterns.Devices that generate light influence individuals’ sleep patterns and cause restleness, which is harmful to be body. Therefore,the use of heavy electronics is associated with increased stress, sleep disorders, and depression. Such sleep-associated challenges affect individuals in the Information Communication and Technology (ICT) industry whereby their work obliges them to utilize computers intensively and to communicate through their phones (McGrath 2012).

Handheld gadgets nowadays can transform into entertainment devices considering various game and leisure apps that a person can download in few seconds. For example, smartphone or tablet can be an instantaneous gaming console. However, the major problem is the addiction to these video games. Besides the frequent strain injuries, persistent use leads to an inactive lifestyle, which results in obesity (Taylor 2015).

Electronics increase the risk for cancer, as most electronic devices produce radiation, which intensifies the likelihood of developing cancer. Research indicates that radiation also kills neurons and damages the immune system.  The majority of modern tech users own many electronic appliances, and the total amount of radiation they release can have a harmful effect on their health. Additionally, mobile phones contain perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a carcinogen typically found in non-stick cookware as well as fabric treatments. Such a poisonous chemical exist in the bloodstream of the majority of the Americans and leads to heart illnesses, cancers, and reproductive diseases. Radiation from electronic devices may cause electric shocks. Therefore, protective measures should be put in place to avoid such effects.

Electronics, such as microwaves, should be utilized with caution because they produce radiation that is dangerous to people. Disposal of electronic devices carelessly, for instance, compact fluorescent light bulbs can release contaminated and corrosive chemicals, which are harmful to human health, into the soil. Such chemicals unavoidably pollute water, air or food, leading to different kinds of diseases. Some deaths are associated with inappropriate use of mobile phones. For example, individuals who drive while using their mobile phones cause accidents because of lack of concentration. Cracks in the cords can cause electric shock; hence, they should be replaced immediately to avoid such incidents. All cables need to be appropriately rated for installation since those that are not up to code may cause fire outbreak. Electrical devices are dangerous when exposed to water and may lead to shocks and fire outbreak. Thus, such devices should be located in safe areas where there is no contact with water or rains.  Moreover, safety guards should be installed around sockets, and electronics should be out of reach for young children, infants, or pets (Manhart 2007).

Electronics play vital roles in individuals’ lives, making it difficult for them to stop using them despite the many risks involved. Scientists are exploring ways of neutralizing the radiation that humans absorb from electronics. Their objective is to minimize the levels of radiation. Even though the research has just started, this certainly brings hope for individuals whose occupations necessitate them to use electronics like cell phones and tablets continually. People should learn to use electronics wisely and safely. All the broken or malfunctioning gadgets should be repaired or replaced to prevent probable health hazards (Calvert & Wartella 2014).

The Impact of Electronics on Social Status

Electronics, such as television enhance interaction among members of a family by bringing them together. The members can watch television and films together. Watching television also encourages “television talk,” which provides a way for individuals to socialize and talk to each other. Television programs are also subjects of conversations that give individuals something to discuss. This process assists in bridging generational divides. Electronics have benefited and changed the meanings of family time by improving different forms of social interaction, access to information, as well as the allocation of time. Computers and laptops have broken the limit of working and family time because people can perform official duties from home. The process has increased interaction and contact among family members (Calvert & Wartella 2014).

New technologies have changed the way individuals learn and entertain themselves. They have led to the privatization of social activities that were in the past performed outside the home.  Family members can engage in electronic gaming, which gives them an opportunity to share their experiences. Educative programs enable children to obtain new skills and improve their school performance. Children’s programs, such as spelling and pronunciations enhance their language skills, which are important in socializing and communicating with others. (McGrath 2012).

Electronic technologies also have a negative impact on social interactions. The young ones’ social development is negatively affected because of increased social seclusion. Children play on their own as parents concentrate on electronic technologies. Besides, children’s well-being is also affected, as they spend much time indoors, and their chances of interacting with family members are minimal. The Internet inhibits teenagers from spending enough time with their families, as they take much time on social media. Electronic devices such as laptops and smartphones have made many people to be withdrawn because they prefer such gadgets to interacting with family members and friends. To enhance interaction, individuals should use these devices together or in a group. Communication between family members revolves around various electronics, such as televisions, laptops, Mp3 players, and mobile phones. This impact has led to a radical change in family relationships, and family values have weathered. Children and parents spend less time talking with and looking at each other when the television is turned on than when it is off.  Moreover, families that take meals in front of the television communicate less and discuss fewer topics compared to those that switch off the television before sitting down for dinner (HUMAN KINETICS 2010).

Spending much time online and utilizing new electronic devices can result in social withdrawal. This process can occur through reduced face-to-face communication and imaginary social relations through the internet.  Moreover, aggressive video content, as well as online games, can negatively affect children’s behavior. Extreme usage of electronic devices is also linked to various social problems, such as low self-esteem, family challenges, marital failure, laziness, and poor academic results. For electronic technologies to influence social interaction positively, family members should employ these tools in conversing and interrelating. This process may entail the utilization of electronics for socialization, for example, engaging in computer games or watching interesting movies. Thus, people should consume new electronic technologies collectively rather than individually (World Health Organization 2015).

Since electronic technology is proliferating, various electronic products have innovative functions that ease, enhance, and transform the lives of people. Among all electronic products, computers and smartphones are widespread due to their various benefits, and they are required in individuals’ daily lives. Every person needs to be more responsible about the utilization of electronic devices to avoid injuries. The electronic technology is neutral, and its effectiveness relies on the manner in which individuals use it.
