As social workers, we should be aware of our own understanding of what it means to be multiracial in society. This awareness includes a review of our own potential biases that might exist. We need to challenge our own personal ideas about how we categorize individuals and those assumptions that follow along with those categories. Rather, we must respect our client’s experience as a multiracial person in the world, beginning with asking him or her how they would define themselves when completing an intake or assessment form. Further, a social worker must be aware of the many forms of racism and prejudice a person with a multiracial background might experience.

Introduction

Multicultural discrimination is becoming an increasingly common phenomenon. This is largely because of the increased rates of inter-racial and inter-ethnic marriages in different parts of the world (Carter, 2011). The main objective of this paper is to understand the impact of discrimination of individuals from multiracial backgrounds, the impact of such discrimination on the society and how such discrimination affects the practice of social work.

Impact of discrimination of individuals from multiracial backgrounds

Any form of discrimination against multiracial individuals in the society creates complications in the process of developing and making adjustments to the racial identities of these individuals. This is largely because such individuals encounter obstacles related to the multiracial background that monoracial individuals do not experience (Shih & Sanchez, 2005). This makes the process of developing a positive racial image more confusing and complicated considering the dilemma of choosing from a single ethnic background or combating societal pressure and embracing biracialism (Jackson, 2010).

Discrimination of multiracial individuals may also result in the development of conflicts between the private and public definitions of these individuals. This is a conflict in relation to self-definition and the definition imposed on these individuals by the society (Jackson, 2010). It is important to note that the ability to find a point of negotiation between self-definition and the environment is essential in successful development of an individual’s racial identity (Carter, 2011).
