Homework Answer on Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory By Dorothea Orem

The main concepts in this theory are nursing, human being, health, environment, and self-care. Other concepts include self-care deficit, basic conditioning factors, such as age and gender, self-care agency, and nursing system. Nursing is considered to be the art through which nurses offer specialized care to patients. Human beings are the persons cared for and they act as material objects to nurses as well as other people that offer care to them.

Environment includes community, culture, and family, whereas self-care entails the activities that people initiate to sustain life and well-being (Barry, Gordon, & King, 2015).   In terms of relationship, the theory considers human beings inseparable from the environment they live in even if the two can be isolated and described. The theory also considers nursing an indispensable human service that exists when nurses offer care to patients.

According to the theory, there has to be a deficit in the care system for nursing to exist. In addition, the patient must be willing to do something based on his/her age and gender for a nursing system to exist (Alligood, 2014). Human beings who in this case tend to be patients are the key focus of the care system in nursing. The environment they live in determines their states of health. When a person is healthy, he/she does not require care, but in case of an illness, the person may not be able to care for him/herself in totality.
