Role as Registered Nurse Leader
Leadership is the ability of a group or an individual to influence others to engage in an activity. For instance, in an organization, leaders of different departments have to monitor how employees conduct their duties for the targets to be met. Moreover, the community needs leaders that will manage projects that will be beneficial to the people. The styles of leadership are how directions are provided and the approach that is followed. The essential characteristics of a leader include enthusiasm and integrity. Therefore, a leader should be enthusiastic as they will be aware of aspects that require improvement, and better strategies to govern the people will be developed. Leadership in the healthcare sector needs responsible people because, in case of an irregularity, they may end up getting reprimanded. Patients entrust their lives to humans; thus they should be handled with care to enhance their well-being (Kwong, 2014). Hence, the discussion elaborates on how registered nurses should identify their roles in the healthcare sector.
The authoritative style positions the leader as the sole decision-maker. Therefore, the staff and subordinates are used as sources for information, yet their ideas are not considered when it comes to determining a conclusion to an issue. Democratic leadership is one in which the members take the most significant part in the process of running the firm. Therefore, it involves the participation of all members where the final decision is made based on the recommendations from the employees. & laissez-faire style is whereby the manager lets the employees work without giving regulations. The leader supervises but does not interrupt the work since the results are commonly used to evaluate performance (Kwong, 2014). Therefore, duties are delegated, and a follow-up is made to ensure that it was accomplished well. For a registered nurse, laissez-faire is the best since employees become self-reliant as there is no one to keep a close eye on what they are doing. This kind of leadership is advantageous since the staff will have an aspect of self-motivation that will make them more productive.
Transformation leadership is whereby a leader works with teams to determine the change that is required. Transactional leadership on the other hand involves supervision and evaluation of performance as the staffs are awarded and punished for the short-term so that productivity is improved. I think transformational leadership is best since the management will determine the areas that need improvement as the employees frequently provide proper feedback as they deal with clients directly.
My leadership role would involve being a representative of the organization as I will ensure that my tasks are accomplished within the deadlines. Moreover, integrity would be of importance since the duties will be performed diligently. I would practice the laissez-faire style since it makes the staff accountable and self-driven. Moreover, the method guarantees good results as the staff will ensure the policies of the firm are adhered. The transformational style makes the team feel appreciated, and they are likely to become loyal to the firm; thus I will practice it. The role of patient care director since it requires strong clinical skills that will provide patients with an assurance of their well-being. The day to day duties includes; developing a protocol for the employees, maintaining the medical regulations in all aspects, meeting the patients with their families and maintaining the service budget. Leadership is outstanding because someone will always be held responsible when activities are not conducted correctly.
Leaders need to involve the staff in the decision-making process to ensure that productivity is enhanced. Note that in nursing the leader needs to be professional and adhere to the nursing standards so that proper service delivery is encountered. Authoritative leadership may be dangerous since the staff may feel dictated by the management. However, leadership requires integrity for the proper performance of the tasks.
