Coaching and Mentoring In Nursing

Coaching and mentoring should be a core competency in nurses as they mainly aim at providing nursing leadership skills, career development, and promotion of intellectual competencies through guidance and action plans. Coaching is an action-oriented activity that ensures that colleagues or novice nurses develop maximum productivity by achieving established goals (Hamric, Hanson, Tracy, & O’Grady, 2014). On the other hand, mentoring is a support-oriented activity that mainly focuses on nursing career development through nurturing and guidance.

            Establishment of goals would be one coaching activity I can do in this advanced practice role. Some of the intended goals during the coaching process may involve timely quality patient care and informing physicians of any patient changes. This would ensure that patients get proper care by experts in case any difficulties arise while providing health care services (Hamric, Hanson, Tracy, & O’Grady, 2014). The strategies to achieve these goals would be to prioritize needs and a timeframe for accomplishing them. For example, quality could be of high priority when taking care of patients.

            Acquisition of knowledge on how to deal with a new patient would be one mentoring activity that could be completed by a novice nurse. This process would involve being taught by a mentor on the best practices when an incoming patient is to be given quality care (Grossman, 2012). This mentoring process would involve procedures such as the initial questions that incoming patient should be asked concerning their health issues. This should be structured and have time frames such as three months to get acquainted with all types of patient health concerns.

            Coaching requires effective communication as an interpersonal skill while mentoring requires commitment and resourcefulness in order to nurture career development and promote leadership and intellectual skills. As such, coaching and mentoring should be core competencies in APN.
