Critiquing a Nursing Article

Introduction

This study analyzes the article by Cheraghi, Ghiyasvandian, and Aarabi (2015) whose title is “Iranian Nurses’ Status in Policymaking for Nursing in Health System: A Qualitative Content Analysis.” From the article’s topic, the reader is able to get a comprehensive idea of what the article is about since the writer has perfectly covered the contents of the article therein. In the introduction, it appears that the authors went a bit out of topic, as they were not able to cover in an excellent manner why nurses would be very reliable in improving the nursing practice by active participation in different areas of policy making, as they are the ones that spend the most time with the patients. However, the authors’ manage to draw the readers’ attention with the strong statements that they put across. For instance, the authors affirm that nurses have not been in recent times making an impact like they are supposed to be doing due to the fact that their voices have not been heard and their command in the health issues and the nursing policies have been extremely weak (Cheraghi et al., 2015).

Statement of Purpose

The article’s statement of purpose would be the evaluation of the nurses’ status in the process of policy making in the health industry. In the introduction, the authors have summarized very well why nurses are in a better choice to occupy the high positions in policy making. They affirm that nurses have one-on-one experiences with the patients in the field hence they have a better understanding of what is needed and what is required in order to make the right decisions and policies. In an effort to explain the statement of purpose the authors point out that the body of nursing as a profession is vital in the treatment practice and offers a reflection of total health policies. This goes on, therefore, to show that nurses need to be more involved in the development of strategies and the modification of policies. This may be important especially in the situations where a crucial decision needs to be made for the patients like euthanasia, which is the process of causing a person’s painless death to end their life (Pirani & Badruddin, 2015).

Research Questions

Though not explicit, the research questions that the authors could have taken into account in this article are centered on how the nurses status are affected differently in different countries due to some factors, which may vary in the dissimilar nations. In the article, the authors have concentrated more on the Iranian nurses. They could also have considered the question on the participation of nurses in the different levels involved in the profession.

Literature review

By not including literature review section in their article the authors of have failed to make use of some already existing studies to try and come up with a sensible and a firm argument on the subject. Nevertheless, they have instead used existing studies to support their analysis throughout their article as a way of directing them as they carry out their research. The article has shown a tendency of depending on an extensive set of studies to try and fortify the arguments and enlighten the reader further. Through its thorough comparison of the data collected and the already existing results from other analysis that have already been carried out it ensures that the room for error in the analysis is greatly reduced hence making the results more trustworthy to the reader. However, the lack of a literature review hindered the authors from using other works focusing on other countries, which would have enhanced the significance of the study.

Methodology

In the article, for the authors to gain a deeper understanding of the status of nurses in the policy making there was the use of a qualitative method. Here, they selected qualitative content analysis to come up with knowledge and insight relating to the subject under study. The purposive sampling procedure was used where the most key informants among the nurse leaders from all levels of management and the non-nurse policy makers were selected. The non-nurse participants were a physician and an epidemiologist. The other participants were matrons and the nursing service managers. The use of such a wide pool of professional participants enhanced the implication of the article. The factors that were considered in the inclusion criteria of the participants were the mean ages, which was at 52.3 years and the work experience, which was at 27.5 years.

Level of Evidence

The level of substantiation that best explains the study may be seen in the fact that the research carried out and the data collection methods are very authentic. The methods that were used in the research, for instance, the qualitative content analysis allowed the authors to carry out the research based on the nursing practice in an accurate and precise manner. This shows that the researchers knew what they were expecting to achieve and this is among the evidence that depicts that the research article has a very high rating. The researchers chose the best method to use in their analysis as what they were analyzing could not be accurately measured (Bowen, 2006). Therefore, the information contained in the article is because of the investigation carried out and since the study was very thorough and properly done, it offers great insight to both the stakeholders and the readers.

Theoretical Framework

From the article, it is clear that there was a certain theoretical framework involved in explaining why the involvement of nurses in the process of policy making is a noble thing. The theory considered is the fact that the experience that the nurses have with the patients provides them with the necessary knowledge that may help in the process of making policies, which will affect the patients. There is also the fact that different factors like economic aspects in dissimilar countries may influence how the nurses in one country tend to involve themselves in the processes of policy making (Ahmed & Safadi, 2013). Therefore, the fact that it depends on the nation is an assumption that can be pointed out.

Conclusion

The article is successful in convincing the readers that the involvement of nurses in the process of policy making is a dignified idea and the variables, which support this, have been properly covered hence making the study a success. The nurses have a very crucial role to play in the policy making process since they have a lot of insight to offer. This is due to the fact that they are always with the patients and, therefore, they know what the patients need and the problems that they go through. Moreover, when they get involved they can help a lot by voicing out their ideas on how new policies should be set and they may encourage amendments on the old policies, which may not be working.
