Homework Answer on Prisoner of the Mountains
The movie, ‘Prisoner of the Mountains’ also referred to as ‘the Prisoner of the Caucasus’ is a Russian war film written in 1996 and directed by Sergei Bodrov. The movie is based on a Caucasian war chronicle, ‘the Prisoner of the Caucasus’ that was written by a Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy. The movie depicts incompatible perceptions flanked by conventional Chechen culture and the Russian warfare. Although the Muslim rebels and the Russian central government are conflicting, they are not willing to let go off their hatred to each other and enjoy freedom.
Individual disagreements connecting two Russian soldiers and the Chechen imprisoners is the major theme, shot in the Dagestan Mountains, a short distance from the ongoing First Chechen war (Bodrov Min. 59). From the movie, it is apparent that war is eternal: the movie is filmed when in reality the Chechen war was ongoing. Eternity of war is further illustrated by the continuous idiocy and revulsion of war through humor, compassion, and gentleness in the drama, which makes the movie more disturbing.
From the mordant outlook of the barracks lifestyle to the deliberately deglamorized mountain battle life, the author highlights the effects of war not only to humanity but also to geography (Bodrov Min. 98). This is further accentuated by the contrasting lifestyles of the Russian soldiers’ captives and the Chechen culture. Abdul, the Chechen captor has captured the two soldiers, for exchange of his son.
