Homework Answer on Influenza (flu) and Health Hazards among Adolescents in New York City (CON)
Influenza is one of the most common illnesses that individuals suffer from, especially during winter. There are various symptoms associated with the illness, such as a dry cough, weakness, and fever (Neustaedter, 2005). Administering the flu vaccines to adolescents is not advisable due to the health complications that may result (Neustaedter, 2005). Some of the common complications include ear or sinus infections and heart problems.
The viral illness is treated easily using vaccines that are mostly administered to prevent the disease. In recent years, there has been a decline in the number of flu and other health hazard cases among the adolescents in New York (Habakus & Holland, 2011). At some point between puberty and adulthood, the body undergoes many physical and emotional changes that may hinder the effectiveness of the vaccine. For example, their rate of metabolism keeps on fluctuating.
This may affect the ability of their antibodies to fight the flu (Habakus & Holland, 2011). Although flu vaccines are known to prevent the illness, most of the adolescents do not go for the shot for health reasons. Among the health reasons is breathing complications, especially for the individuals with illnesses such as asthma (Neustaedter, 2005).
