Professional Development for Strategic Managers


This paper discusses personal development skills that will enable our organization to attain professional development. The paper focusses on personal and professional skills that are necessary in any organizational success. It also highlights a personal audit that will be performed to assess strategic skills, which are crucial in meeting current leadership essentials and thereafter applying effective techniques in the identification of the best learning styles. The paper also creates a personal development plan in the attainment of personal work objectives.

Currently, I am an employee in one of the LG supply chain stores located in Pakistan as a Supplies Manager. LG is an electronic organization that was formed in 1958 as a result of a union between two Korean Organizations Luck and Gold stars. This amalgamation led to the formation of LG, which means life is good, and it remained to be the name of the firm. LG organization operates its business globally in several nations and enjoys a massive market in its electronic products. The organization operates under an advanced corporate governance structure involving professional administrators and board of directors. Initially, the organization had Circulating Investment Structures in its affiliate organizations but since the formation of holding company, they have been removed. The holding company controls all the investments of the organizations. This has enhanced the organization’s competition globally. Respecting human dignity and creating value for customers are the key values that shape the culture of LG. Strategic direction depends on organizational elements, such as LG leaders. One of the main components of strategic leadership among organizations is skill audit, which refers to an individual’s specific skills that are significant in fulfilling personal or organizational needs. These skills are significant in ensuring that a person is suitable at his/her place of work, which enhances the knowledge and skills to succeed in life. These personal skills are also important in achieving strategic goals for an organization.

Personal and Professional Skills in Attainment of Strategic Goals

Every person has natural skills that are attained in the process of growth and development. Personal skills are significant in helping an individual to solve daily issues and problems that are encountered in different situations. Some of the problems might seem small but lack of personal skills to manage them can be a challenge. Personal skills are enhanced by intelligence skills among individuals, which assist people in managing a situation with a positive outlook. If a person does not have positive thoughts, it can be difficult for him/her to manage situations that he/she encounters in life. Personal skills in leadership entail the manner in which an individual balances his/her personal life with other issues (Chuang 1). The need for this balance is significant because it influences how one deals with personal issues and relationship, which can affect professional responsibilities. Professional skills are required in an individual’s career of professional life in order to carry out his/her responsibilities effectively.

Furthermore, professional skills help organizational leaders in managing other subordinate employees. There are two main categories of commonly acknowledged professional skills: soft skills and technical skills. Soft skills are important in helping organizational leaders to effectively manage employees under their control and customers (Nganga 262). The skills include communication skills that enable leaders to effectively engage with their employees in addressing their problems and solving issues. Another soft skill involves leadership skills. Leadership skill is crucial for all organizational leaders as it assists them in achieving the goals and objectives of organizations through strategic planning and management (Fairholm 7). Another soft skill is problem solving skills that involve the ability of leaders within an organization to solve issues or concerns being raised both externally or internally without affecting the organization in terms of losing its image or financial losses. Without problem solving skills, a leader cannot effectively lead an organization to success. Under problem solving skills, a leader should also be in position to come up with schedules for the organization and employees and set targets that should be met within a given period of time. This process ensures effective flow of work, an aspect that also empowers employees in their performances. Managers also need to possess motivational skills (GANTA 223). These skills are wide and aimed at inspiring employees to perform their duties with courage and enthusiasm. Motivation of employees can be direct, for instance, through gifts and kind words, encouragement or recognition. The main intention of motivating employees is to create unseen power within them, which can enhance the attainment of organizational goals and objectives.

Technical skills entail other external construction skills, for instance, setting targets and coming up with training skills that help in attaining them. Technical skills, in other words, polish the soft skills among employees and organizational leaders. These skills are also used as motivating factors among organizations, which ensure that organizational objectives are attained.

Effective Management and Leadership

Every leader in an organization needs to have effective management and leadership skills to be part of strategic direction construction. In an organizational set up, there are different people in different positions who are different at personal levels. Nevertheless, these differences should be incorporated in solving organizational issues and offering strategic goals and objectives. They should not be seen as sources of division. Therefore, through management and leadership skills, organizational leaders are in a position to address minor concerns of employees through an exchange process, thus ensuring that tasks are performed within set times without affecting organizational goals (Cossin and Caballero 5).

Organizational managers also need to have effective personal and professional skills in assisting them to maintain a balance between personal life and professional responsibilities. These two situations can affect an individual if there is no balance, for instance, lack of control of personal issues can make a person to have a stressful moment. A personal issue can be extended to a workplace, thus making a person to have a low performance. This anger can also be directed to other employees, which despite being a personal issue, affects other employees’ performances and output.

Furthermore, every person within a working environment should have self-awareness skills. Self-awareness is important in helping organizational leaders and employees to manage their responsibilities and behaviors (Biggs 2017). When people understand their duties, they are in a position to carry out a skill audit, thus planning for the future at a personal and organizational level. Moreover, a motivational skill among leaders in management is important as it helps employees in addressing the issues and problems they face and inspire them to work well.

Problem solving skills enable an individual to effectively progress in his/her career. This is a process in which an individual is in position to come up with immediate solutions to address different concerns or problems through an efficient investigation and analysis. Problem solving skills also ensure that the problems within organizations are diagnosed, and their root causes are established (Darr 12). This helps in everting similar future issues.

Communication skills is among the basic requirement for organizational leaders (Mumford et al. 156). Communication helps individuals in organizations to provide information that is to be implemented by employees. Without proper communication skills, an organizational leader may not be in a position to provide effective guidance on what needs to be done in organizations. Poor communication skills also lead to poor solving of issues among organizational employees since managers and employees fail to agree on best strategies that need to be put in place to solve emerging concerns. Good communication skills also enhance good relationship in organizations.

Effective Professional Leadership Skills

Effective leadership skills entail several qualities that enhance positive characteristics of a person within a working environment to develop aspects effective strategic planning. Leadership skills among individuals enhance a positive organization direction, which encourages aspects like team participation, strategic planning, allocating responsibilities and scheduling organizational tasks. Furthermore, an effective leader within an organization is in a position to set plans for a firm and ensures that they are attained. Effective leaders should also focus on their employees and ensure that they give out their best through regular trainings to develop organizational success (Dinwoodie et al. 2).

Good leaders are responsible for their duties. Furthermore, good leaders are able to command their subordinates in an effective manner and in case of a bad situation, they take the brave responsibility of leading people in normalcy with an approval of the employees. Good leaders are also brave and believe in doing something, no matter how impossible it may seem. In this situation, leaders take the responsibility of marinating a balance between the employees and the situation, thus providing direction and solution with regard to the prevailing conditions. This helps in not only marinating good relationship with employees but also steer the organization in the right direction.

A good leader also fortifies the morale and inspires other organizational members (Ngambi 762). This is achieved through making them more productive in all areas. Weak areas of employees are motivated and strategies to satisfy their needs are put in place by the leaders to ensure that both the organization and employees attain their goals at personal and company level respectively.

In strategic management and direction of an organization, effective leadership skills entails putting in place planning strategies and implementing them. Implementing these strategies relies on the motivation of employees and thus it is a major task for leaders. This affirms the need for effective leadership skills in all organizations because without effective leadership skills, execution of strategic plans within the organization will not be effective. In implementing organization strategic planning, effective leaders need to organize its workforce through training and guidance (Jehanzeb and Nadeem). After they are prepared, the allocation of responsibilities is done in accordance to each employee’s ability. This leads to effectively attaining of the strategic goals and responsibilities.

In this task, the main issues include coming up with the assessment of both personal and professional skills of development. Personal development and professional skills development are significant and interrelated. According to the analysis, it is evident that personal skills lead to a person’s professional skill development and professional growth. Furthermore, effective personal skills are vital for an individual to attain effective professional life. Without good personal skills, one cannot attain professional skills and therefore personal skills are the main determinants of organizational success.

Strategic Skills to Meet Current and Future Leadership

To meet the current and future leadership, one should be able to identify his/her strengths, weakness, and opportunities at a personal level. Some qualities are necessary for leaders and if they are absent, it is difficult for a person to meet the requirement to be considered a leader. These assist an individual in establishing if he/she has effective skills in solving problems within organizations in all situations. This include effective presentation in conveying information to the employees and other audiences effectively. Team building is also key for leaders in management to ensure that an organization attains its set goals and objectives within the set timeframe.

Furthermore, effective leaders need to possess good problem solving skills in sorting out issues that emerge between employees in an amicable and intelligent manner. In attainment of organizational goals, leaders also need to have motivational skills to ensure that employees are triggered towards working toward the set objectives.  In general, in the current and future leadership, the most significant skills are communication and leadership skills as they play a significant role in ensuring the aforementioned skills are put into practice during planning, organization, leading and controlling the organization to attain the set goals and objectives. The requirement of this task is to conduct a personal audit of my skills. I have come up with an evaluation of some of the personal skills I have and rated them in accordance to the past experiences.

I conducted a review of my personal skills, which were rated by my colleagues and evaluated as indicated in the table below. The skills were rated in terms of being Good, Average or Poor.

I have the power to influence people through communication and my knowledge capacity. Through my effective communication skills, I can make people to listen to what I say and convince those with different objectives.


My dressing code is appropriate at all times, thus presenting a good image. All the materials to be used in my presentation are always in a good condition, and I behave in a friendly way during presentation. I use effective language and visual aids to make my points clear.

Personal Analysis

My greatest strengths are effective time management, good communication skills, couching and good work prioritization. No person is perfect, and I am working towards improving my weaknesses to become a good leader. My weaknesses are lack of consultation in making decisions and I do not believe in work delegation because of inadequate interaction with my colleagues. Nevertheless, I also have opportunities that I thrive upon, for instance, being sensitive to my environment by listening to my colleagues and juniors. This makes me have a great opportunity to be a good manager in the future. LG organization will help me improve on this facet due to its multifaceted operating environments. Threats are all over and facing them requires a lot of confidence. All the threats around our organization are normal and with courage and boldness, I am able overcome them and give direction. This gives me courage to be an effective leader in the future.

Preferred Learning Styles

Individuals have their own approach in ascertaining a learning style in which they know they can learn better. Personally, I have identified the styles that are suitable for my learning, which improve my work.

Firstly, I am the reflector. I always look at things with a second eye. This has enabled me to make decisions based on past experiences and occurrence of events. This process has made me to develop the need to obtain more information on anything I come across. I am also a theorist; I have always been active and solve issues logically. This has helped me to learn more. I am also a pragmatist, and I have always endeavored to put everything I learn into practice.

Personal Development Plan

To ensure that I have effective leadership skills, I will build self-confidence and personal belief that I can make it in leadership. This will establish the power within me to know that I can do everything within my reach and at organizational level. Moreover, I need to have a positive thinking attitude. This is significant in ensuring that I have a solid moral basis for my work and I am able to see things out of the box to assist me come up with solutions in difficult situations and help people see things from a different perspective. This will assist me to motivate other employees to have different ideas, thus motivating them in their work.

Presentation Skills

Effective presentation skills are important at a personal and organizational level. Since I work in a diverse environment, effective presentation skills have helped me to present the organization’s products to be sold to customers appropriately. This will have a positive impact on my part and that of the organization. To attain the skills, I will attend several conferences, trainings, and events, and create an expansive socializing network to keep in touch with current happenings and obtain more knowledge from reading different materials. Moreover, I will also need to improve my language skills and strive to get feedback from other friends and colleagues.

Decision Making Skills

Decision making skills are also significant at all levels of leadership. Through enhanced decision making, I can be of value to my organization. Since I work in an organization that deals with customers, effective decision making will assist me in seeking advice from my colleagues that will be beneficial to the organization and the customers. Decision in this sector is enhanced through constant conversation with my colleagues and attending organization programs.


Delegation develops a harmonious working environment within an organization. It also enhances the team performance in the attainment of goals and objectives. To enhance delegation, I need to start trusting my colleagues and interacting with them more frequently. This also calls for me to be tolerant with them.


Through effective planning, organizations are also able to earn higher profits and attain the set objectives effectively. Good planning in a firm also involves feedback from customers through surveys, reports from other managers, and the performance data. Planning can also be enhanced through attending seminars and conferences.

Impact of Own Learning Against the Achievement of Strategic Goals

Learning is very significant in individuals’ personal and professional development. These skills are significant in enhancing both personal and organizational development. The presentation skills are the most significant in the retail department of the organization because of dealing directly with customers, thus the need to communicate effectively. I have developed a personal development plan to enhance my presentation skills, which are crucial in my personal and organization attainment. Through feedback from my fellow employees, I am in a position to get more insights and work on my weak areas, which are experiencing substantial improvement in my daily operations. I have enhanced my social connection and gained professional skills from seminars and workshops I attended.

Furthermore, after coming up with the personal development plan, I have also been able to enhance my decision- making skills. Through reading, I have understood some elements in decision making that I did not know before. This has helped me in ensuring that I make decisions that are beneficial both at personal level and organizational level. Initially, I could not seek help from my colleagues due to poor relations. This made it difficult for me to receive help whenever I had a problem. This problem caused delays in the provision of services to customers. Nevertheless, through the personal developmental plan, I can now effectively consult and ensure that customers are served satisfactorily.

Through delegation of duties as developed in my personal development plan, I have been able to assign duties to my team members, which has been effective to the organization. Delegation is as aspect that is currently significant to all leaders y. Furthermore, I have also learned to trust my fellow employees and we can now communicate frequently. This has helped me to reduce my work pressure, making it possible for me to attain my set objectives in a conducive atmosphere.

Through effective planning, my work has been made easier and flexible than before. Conducting surveys and constant communication with other senior employees has helped me to understand my roles and responsibilities in an effective manner. Therefore, my personal understanding of work has been enhanced because I am able to overcome several difficulties and attain organizational objectives.


In the personal development plan in this task, there are goals that are set that required a personal development plan for them to be achieved. This shows hoe significant a personal development plan is for any person who aspires to be an effective leader.
