Homework Answer on Generations at Work and Role of Strategic Human Resource Management
What advantages and disadvantages are there with having multiple generations working in the same company? Provide specific examples for each.
The multiple generations that may be currently working for same company are Baby Boomers in the age of 55 years, Millennials or Generation Y in the age of 22 years and Generation X the 45 five year olds. There are opportunities and challenges presented to an organization engaging a mix of these generations. Generally, the opportunity derived relates to the unique experiences and skills that are obtained from each of these generations while the challenge comes from handling the generational differences that distinguish each one of them.
There are also advantages and disadvantages associated with working with each one of these generations. For instance, Baby Boomers believe they can do any activity that they set their sights on and are accustomed to working hard and for extended hours so that they can achieve their objective. However, their adaption to new technologies, which has currently become a necessity to all organizations, is a challenge for some.
The generation Y is considered to be the most technological savvy and therefore in a position to adapt to changing technologies fast; they are also very enthusiastic about their jobs and perform well as individuals. This generation is not very good at teams work and is less hard working in their projects unlike Baby Boomers, which may negatively affect an organization’s productivity. The generation X is considered to have the best managers compared to Boomers generation.
