Power, in the context of an organization, is of social nature and is primarily manifested through behavioral influence and interaction with other organization’s members. Decisions such as hiring, firing, organizational goals, and prioritization of resource allocation among others are influenced by organizational politics. Power and politics can be used to cause dysfunction too, with many leaders losing their positions or facing litigations due to shifting and conflicting power bases and loyalties and destructive organizational power struggles (Drory & Vigoda-Gadot 2010, 195).
Therefore, employees from all levels of management, and most importantly, senior management, must skillfully handle the contradicting agendas power bases within the organizations (Bauer & Erdogan 2016). This paper focuses on Brendan Eich, former chief executive officer (CEO) of Mozilla Corporation who was forced to resign from his position due to dysfunctional organizational politics.
Brendan Eich, formerly a CEO of the tech-giant he helped found in 1998, resigned from his position in less than a month because of undue pressure from fellow board members. Some board members resigned from their positions citing indifference to his strategic plans for the company and his apparent lack of experience in strategic areas that the company was seeking to invest in: mobile industry (Machkovech 2014). At the core of the controversy was Eich’s loss of referent power to influence other subordinates after he financially supported the passing of an antigay marriage proposition in California in 2008.
