Leadership Studies

Leadership starts with the personal belief and ability to lead oneself before leading others. Essentially, leaders are expected to focus on the difference they expect to make rather than welling on worrying that they may achieve their goals. Leaders are supposed to lead and set an example to be followed by their followers. Creating an enabling inspiration to the employees is one of the most vital duties of each exemplary leader. Leaders endeavor to lead the way for the employees rather than dictating to them every detail of their work. Being an excellent leader is never easy as it requires commitment, patience, and ample time to master the role (Kouzes & Posner, 2013). In each leadership role, there usually exists room for improvement, and therefore,  leaders can master their skills on the job. Lack of complete trust in workers, inadequate communication and connection with employees, and stunted growth of workers in their leadership skills are quite challenging leadership areas. Thus they need to be addressed, and they can be in different ways.

                                                               Modeling the Way

Leaders institute principles which regulate the operations of their followers towards the realization of the overall set objectives. Leaders are responsible in providing a performance curve under which employees work along towards the achievement of the overall goal. Additionally, they foster and build spirited teams at the workplace. Mutual respect sustains the efforts of leaders of creating an atmosphere of trust and dignity to (Kouzes & Posner, 2012). Empowering employees to become self-reliant through the adequate disbursement of information regarding how to grow in their various contributions to the firm develops a healthy relationship between leaders and their followers.

Inspire a Shared Vision

Leaders should inspire their followers into envisioning the future that they desire so that they can work towards achieving it. Leaders should also think of all the exciting and possible outcomes of the contributions of their followers and guide them into achieving the outcomes. Inspiring the sharing of ideas and contributions towards the bigger picture through creating an enabling communication plan with the employees is essential to excellent leadership. Leaders ought to create an enabling dialogue between them and their employees to learn their ideas and dreams rather than impose on them what they should follow (Kouzes & Posner, 2012). People who have a common vision create an ample environment for personal and organizational development through the sharing of ideas. Leaders who inspire a shared vision are trusted, and thus people believe in their leading role hence people are inclined to follow them. It is also important to seek the input of the workers when it comes to aspects of an organization that affects them so that they can feel like they are part of the entity, rather than a means to an end.

Behavioral Theory

The behavioral theory considers the different actions of leaders based on their personal behavior. Behavioral theories ascribe to the assumption leaders are made rather than born. Successful leadership is based on the behavioral interaction of a leader. The character of the leader is the best predictor of his or her success in influencing followers. Human behavior is experienced throughout an individual’s lifetime and affects his or her way of acting based on the different influencing factors. Behavioral differentiation between individuals results in different leadership approaches and skills. A devolved environment, which allows contributions between the leader and the follower, enables progress towards the big picture of an organization and its stakeholders. Since leadership traits can be learned, leaders need to focus their energy on learning the leadership qualities that are best suited for their followers. A productive and future-oriented group requires visionary leaders who are ready to lead them to achieve their goals.

An exemplary leader is on that considers the needs of his or her followers, rather than makes decisions without their input and obliges them to achieve the objectives. A leader who involves workers in decision making helps them to share his or her vision and thus achieve it. Other than excellent remuneration and working environment, including employees in making plans for a company and by extension theirs is an excellent productivity driver.
