Sample Internal Memo on Criminal Justice Essay Summary: In-Service Training

INTERNAL MEMO

TO: The Warden

FROM: The Associate Warden

SUBJECT: In-Service Training

Due to the fact that correctional officers have to deal with people of different calibers within the correctional facilities, there is need for these officers to possess certain skills which can only be achieved through in-service training in some instances. For this reason it is recommended that every officer should undergo training before and after joining work.

Before joining work, all officers must undergo training on various.  Academic training will take five weeks at the county’s training headquarters and will include subjects such as inmate behavior, communication skills and self-defense among others. The entire subjects are examinable in written form. The officers will also have to undergo hand –to hand self-defense training since they are not allowed to wield guns in the prisons, training on prison procedures such as the mode of conducting searches and seizures and trainings on how to write reports on various prison occurrences.

After joining the work force, all officers will be required to receive in-service training matching their roles in the prison. For instance, correctional officers will undergo training for one year to perfect their skills since they are new in the job; correctional corporals will be trained on gun handling and conducting searches; correctional sergeants will be trained on supervisory roles; lieutenants will be trained on overall supervision while the captains and majors and the wardens will be trained on communication, administration and management respectively.

These trainings are useful in improving efficiency and effectiveness (Wasim, 2006); and are needed because they equip officers with problem solving skills, stress-coping and teamwork skills (Bales, 1997). Consequently, it is recommended that besides these particular trainings, there should be consideration of providing mental health training as this reduces the probability of using force in the correctional facilities (Indiana University School of Medicine, 2009).
