Human resources functions are tasks and duties performed to enable proper running and handling of human resources. The six functions as named by the SHRM include Human resource planning, recruitment and selection, human resource development, compensation and benefits, safety and health, Employee and labor relations and human resource research (Talwar 55). Above all human resource management requires other skills such as communication for effective organization of the system.
- Essence of the Supreme Court decision, General Electric Co. v. Gilbert, on the passage of the PDA
It was after the verdict of the case, General Electric Company v. Gilbert, that Supreme Court had decreed in favor of General Electric, noting, “Title VII of the Civil Rights Act did not protect women from pregnancy-based discrimination.” As a result, the Congress amended Title VII, and allowed the Civil Rights Act to protect pregnant women with the passing of PDA, thus upending decision of the Supreme Court case of 1976 between General Electric Company against its employee Gilbert. Before the revision of the act, the Civil Rights act of 1964 lacked a clause that protected pregnant women against discrimination at the workplace. Therefore, the ruling led to passage of the PDA act, saying that women should not be discriminated on the basis of pregnancy, childbirth or related medical conditions (General Electric Company v. Gilbert, n.p).
