Behavioral Competencies within the Leadership Domain
Managers, aspiring managers, and top-level management are concerned with developing their competencies to be effective leaders. My strengths as a leader include social and emotional intelligence skills. These skills help me understand the social situation and dynamics within the work setting. Understanding social intelligence builds on human relationships and the importance of building links with employees to maximize productivity in diverse social situations.
Gaining critical awareness of the way leaders can support and redefine business goals is one of the valuable competencies of leadership I feel I need to improve on. Developing business acumen enables managers to be accountable for organizational decisions and can elevate the functions of a leader. Developing acumen preserves the minds of leaders to build on the business perspective, strategic thinking, and nurturing innovations (Gray, 2008). Ethical practice and professionalism help leaders to build trust with employees and manage personal and organizational reputation.
Several strategies to improve my competencies as a leader include learning to regulate and control emotions and prevent emotional outbursts. This will help me learn to express emotion in more ways that are appropriate. To develop social intelligence, one requires exposure to different people with different cultural and social backgrounds to develop social perceptiveness and meaningful interaction (Riggio, 2014). This will help me develop my interpersonal skills as well. Practising to read employees’ non-verbal cues especially emotional cues will improve communication and eventually the working relationships. Finally, there is a need to develop my decision-making skills to fit business goals. Leaders need to learn how to make decisions more consciously. Great leaders learn from their past experiences to improve on their decision-making skills.
