Sample Health Care Paper on understanding of CAM (Complementary and alternative medicine)

Define CAM

Complementary and alternative medicine is the term for medical products and practices that are not part of standard medical aims to achieve the healing effects of medicine, but which lacks biological plausibility and is untested or proven ineffective.

Describe the patient who uses CAM the most

The patient who uses CAM the most are children with chronic disabling or recurrent conditions. CAM is used by families where children have mental health diagnoses is widespread.( A Tayeb, JB Le Cam, B Loez – Mechanics of Materials, 2022 – Elsevier) Research reveals that females  use CAM the most more than men it improve their quality of life by reducing fatigue pain and anxiety in  older people of the age bracket (45-64).

List common misconceptions about CAM

Common misconceptions developed against CAM are: alternative medicine is only seen as alternative when most of the practioners that practice it are professional doctors. Some people believe that alternative medicine is not the mainstream when doctors and scientists perform research and studies on different therapies to determine if they are effective. It is a myth that medical institution are against the use of alternative medicine.

Identify methods of including the use of CAM in patient education

Methods of including the use of CAM in patient education are: use a standardize form that is designated in specific areas help in effective way to find quickly important information. Document formal and informal teaching because they are essential to patient education and should be documented in a chart. Describe the response if learners, patient education which include brief description of the topic discussed

Discuss the safe use of CAM

It is important to consider safe use of CAM before its use. Regarding the risks of CAM therapies themselves, some are clearly safe and even safer than conventional medicine practices. Philosophy of CAM therapies generally emphasize their mode of action in mobilizing self-healing which implies they must be perfectly safe. More than 80% of patients regard CAM as safe and so often do not consider the possibility that treatment may have side effects

List ways in which conventional medicine and CAM can be integrated

CAM can be integrated by use of mind body therapy approaches that is guiding imagery and progressive relaxation. It can also be integrated through physical therapies; yoga, tai chi, massage and acupuncture and through nutritional support

Define ethical theories, ethical principles and values

Ethical theories are attempts to provide a clear, unified account of what our ethical obligations are, ethical theories attempts to clarify what it is right or wrong to do in a particular situation. Ethical principles are part of normative theory that justifies or defend moral rules or judgment. Ethical values denotes something degree of importance, with the aim of determine what action or life is best to do or what way is best to live or significance of different actions.

Provide examples of ethical issues in patient education and compliance, and describe ways in which an effective professional or patient relationship and poor health professional/patient relationship can impact these issues

Ethical issues examples are unethical leadership, toxic workplace culture, discrimination, unrealistic and conflicting goals and questionable use of company technology. An effective professional or patient relationship should be ethical where both are free to air their views and to be treated without being biased. Work place should be a place to offer quality services and treatment for all without being biased.

Explain what is meant by “ethical patient education practices”

Ethical patient education practices are the best ways patients through their volition and accurate information, make decisions regarding acceptance, accordance and compliance with the preferred treatment (Sorrell, 2017). It is a way through which patients are convinced that after discussion are made with the health practitioners as guided by the values of acceptance honesty and openness, the patients choose treatments offered to them.

Explain the purpose of informed consent

The main purpose of the informed consent is to protect the patient. A consent form is legal document that ensures an ongoing communication process between an individual and the healthcare provider. It implies that healthcare provider gives information about the condition and treatments options and that which has been used to choose the right option.

Discuss what factors determine the patient’s ability to give informed consent.

Valid informed consent for research has three major factors of the patient ability to give informed consent.: disclosure of information between the patient and the healthcare practitioner, competency of the patient; is the patient competent enough to provide the needed information and to make decisions, use voluntary nature of the decision determining its potential risks.

Discuss the process of communication to use with the patient and the family when obtaing informed consent

Effective informed consent discussion involves various process ; establish rapport with the patient to familiarize with the client, obtaining permission for the discussion from the client to determine readiness to listen, prepare the listener on what to be discussed, gather information about the patients perspective , providing information about the clinical research and discussion of the next step.
