Homework Answer on Fresh water shortage
Fresh water shortage is looming all over the globe, as many reservoirs continue to dry, leaving more than a billion people without ways to access safe drinking water. According to The Guardian, one in seven individuals on the planet does not access safe drinking water (McKie 3). Although the number of people relying on water for consumption is rising, satellite images have indicated that the supply is shrinking alarmingly. Excess use of water, melting of ice, and global warming, has been blamed for the decline in fresh water that is safe for human consumption. Overconsumption of water would result in rationing and conflicts over the available commodity in the future.
The Middle East countries have become deserts due to excess use of water despite the region’s capacity to receive adequate rainfall to support agriculture. Some countries such as UAE have turned to desalination process to supplement fresh water. Although the Earth’s water can fill a sphere that measures about 272 kilometers in diameter, only 56 kilometers incorporates fresh water (McKie 4-5). The available fresh water in lakes and rivers is also under threat of global warming, which could reduce it volume, leading to global food crisis.
The competition of water resources is likely to persist throughout the twenty-first century. Changing precipitation, as well as melting of snow and ice, has continued to alter hydrological systems across the world, leading to water shortage. The shrinking of glaciers has resulted to crisis in communities that live downstream (McKie 5). Some countries, such as Egypt and Ethiopia, have experienced water crisis for decades, as they strive to satisfy their people using water from River Nile. Water crisis is likely to hurt all individuals around the globe, since the current consumption of water is not likely to sustain humanity in the future.
