Sample Essay on Causes and Effects of World War 1

There were several causes and effects of World War 1. In 1914, the entire world was engaged in throes of a war which was called the First World War. It was called the World War because it had unprecedented horribleness as well as its extensive nature. The war was a result of the inevitable crisis of the international situation.

One of the causes of the World War 1 was the Vienna Congress. In 1815, the nationalism resolution of congress was disregarded completely. As a result, Europe had potent nationalistic systems or movements. Sharp colonial and commercial rivalries between the European powers also caused the war. This was due to the competition for colonies that caused a battle between the European countries.

The power of Germany after its unification made it a competitor for England. The two competed in manufacturing industrial goods. Germany needed colonies to sell its finished products and get raw materials from. France and England have established colonies in Africa and Asia and they viewed Germany as their rival.

European countries were also determined to increase militarization. The industrial revolution made it possible for the super powers to improve military power. After sometime, the countries became enemies and they started using their military power against each other. Politics in Europe made the situation suitable for war. Eventually, Europe was divided into Triple Alliance with Germany leading the group and Triple Entente led by Russia, England and France due to fear of invasion or aggression.

The immediate cause of World War I was the ghastly murder of Francis Ferdinand as well as his wife at Sarajevo. Austrian government accused Serbia of the murder and it demanded a reply within 48 hours. The reply given did not satisfy Austria and it declared war with Serbia.

Among the effects of World War I that lasted for 4 years included the loss of millions of lives on the battlefields. Others people were maimed or mutilated in a war whose extent had not been precedent in the past.

There was also a change in Europe where the Austrian, Turkish, Russian, and German empires fell. New states such as Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia emerged. There were also changes in the older states. Nationalism and democracy were also part of the changes that came with World War I. Nationalistic movements in Europe, African, and Asia also gained momentum.

Democratic administrations and labor groups became part of the newly established states. There was also the passing of labor welfare in some countries.
