Children should use the Internet under the control of their Parents

The internet is the system of interconnected computing networks linking numerous devices and units across the world. These units include public, academic, private, organizational, and government networks with different scopes and levels of operations. The internet is a vital resource and medium of communication for numerous users of different ages with diverse objectives. For children, the internet is useful as a source of information and resource for their learning, with its applications serving as important means of sharing and communication in learning, recreation through computer and online games, and promotion of creativity and imagination(Cankaya and Odabasi1105). Nevertheless, the internet’s lack of effective and centralized control promotes the prevalence of threats against the safety of users. Children are especially susceptible to such risks because of their innocence and lack of experience and competence in identifying threats and making decisions.

Considering the importance of childhood as a critical stage of development during which the child acquires worldview and develops personality and knowledge about the world, this paper argues that it is essential for parents to control children’s use of the internet to protect them from abuse, mistreatment, and other safety threats (Cankaya and Odabasi1105-1106). The paper argues that parental control of children’s use of the internet allows their guidance for the best and most productive utilization of the internet’s features and applications for the biggest advantages and most useful facilitation of children’s learning and development.

Internet use has acquired much popularity among children in recent years, with children accessing the facility easily in homes and schools. For a child, the internet is one of the most vital tools and resources when there is effective management of its access. Children can access learning resources such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, and journals and obtain up-to-date information on current affairs on the internet. Applications such as email, chatrooms, and social media provide children with important means to share with their friends and express themselves, while games, interactive forums, and puzzles enable them to develop in creativity, imagination, social, and intuitive skills (Johnson 176-177). The internet also enables children to have friends and communicate with peers across international borders and from different ethnic, racial, and cultural backgrounds, enhancing their worldview and understanding of diversity. The internet features a broad variety of forums that children can choose according to their interests and preferences and contribute their thoughts, while learning from peers through experiences of different perspectives and ideas. Games and other fun applications and forums online are vital sources of cognitive and psychosocial development for children, with advantages in imagination and inspiration (Johnson 176-177). The internet’s forums supplement other sources of information and learning such as reading and the mass media, enabling children to experience fun and motivationin learning.

The vast library of knowledge on the internet can confuse children because of the huge diversity of opinions and perspectives that are available. A huge amount of information and knowledge is available freely online, including conflicting information and different perspectives on individual topics. Without direction and guidance, children can access resources and forums whose contents are detrimental or undermine their development. Children’s minds are not mature enough to fathom and process some of the information that is available online (Lepicnik-Vodopivec and Samec 54-55). For the best and most productive development, children need to access varieties of learning resources and scopes of knowledge and information that are suitable for their specific stages of development. Sexual content and advanced professional resources are irrelevant for children, and children’s access of such resources could undermine their development. Parental guidance is necessary to ensure that children do not access levels and scopes of information and resources that are irrelevant and unnecessary at their age (Johnson 176-177; Valcke et al 4-5). The internet has influenced convenience and efficiency in community members’ activities, communications, learning, information access, and sharing. The same advantages can apply for children with positive outcomes with effective management of children’s use of the resource under the control of parents.

Opponents of parental control in children’s use of the internet could argue that freedom is the best way to allow children’s greatest benefit from the internet and its vast information resources. They would argue that parental control would undermine children’s liberty to decide the resources to access and utilize to enhance their learning. Nevertheless, this argument is unsound because of the numerous risks to which children have exposure in their use of the internet.Parental control is necessary in children’s use of the internet to protect them from the broad range of risks that the internet features for their safety and wellbeing. Parents need to protect them from these risks through control of their use of the internet (Cankaya and Odabasi1106-1107). These risks involve threats to the safety and wellbeing of children because of the internet’s lack of centralized and effective supervision mechanism to control dangers for users. The first risk involves the simplicity of creation of deceitful identities on the internet. Criminals aiming to achieve selfish objectives or abuse children online such as bullies and sexual predators could join forums that are popular among children to prey on them, utilizing false identities. Modern technologies and advancements have enabled criminals to utilize different methods to achieve anonymity or false identities online, such as through use of multiple servers in communications (Valcke et al 4-5). Without a foolproof method to certify the identity of an internet user, children face risks of falling prey to the plans of bullies and sexual predators, and parents have responsibilities to offer guidance to them in their use of the internet to protect them from such threats to their wellbeing and safety.

Exposure to violence constitutes another risk for children, with numerous sites containing violence of different types, such as gender violence and violence against children and the aged. Sexual violence is also common on the internet, with numerous sites and transmissions through spam and pop-up messages offering images of violence and sexual content. Children are especially susceptible to sexual predators because most criminals utilize patience and devote significant amounts of energy, finances, and time, including empathy, to achieve their objectives, especially targeting innocent and naïve individuals. They also utilize the approach of introducing sexual content to children gradually to lower their inhibitions progressively and acquire their trust, aiming at possible face-to-face meetings (Cankaya and Odabasi1106-1108).Children could also experience physical molestation due to use of the internet when they provide their phone numbers or online account details to strangers. Using chat rooms, emails, instant messaging services, and other forums, the criminals may molest children, cause safety threats, and influence negative outcomes on their wellbeing, such as self-confidence and self-esteem problems (Valcke et al 4-5). The contacts may also influence children’s adoption of behaviors that are detrimental to their wellbeing and development, such as substance abuse and immoral behaviors.

Without parental guidance, it is clear that children would face difficulties in using internet resources effectively to influence positive learning and cognitive development outcomes while ensuring their safety and wellbeing.
