Homework Answer on LED Transmitters
Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) transmitters are a type of optical transmitters that utilize incoherent light for the transmission of data/information in the telecommunication systems. The incoherent light produced by the LEDs comprises of several energy packets each having differing frequencies, but this light can be set at a given frequency or wavelength for desirable transmission characteristics like power and functionality. Frequency modulation is an important aspect in LED transmitters as it affects the rate at which the LEDs will transmit the data/information.
It involves varying the transmitting wave signal between a predefined set of frequency. Frequency modulation is a desired specification in LED transmitters as it improves the quality of data transmitted especially in the telecommunications industry considering that it improves the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) (Brumbach & Clade, 2012).A typical question about the functionality/specification of LEDs would be: What is the effect of the incoherence of the light produced by the LED transmitters on its applications?
LED transmitters produce their signals by spontaneous emission. In spontaneous emission, light signals with no particular direction are generated and would contain packets of different frequencies (Woodward, 2014). The indefinite orientation of the light signals produced would mean that LED transmitters could only be combined with the multimode fibre though the efficiency of the fibre would still be small. Even then, LED transmitters are preferable considering their reliability, durability and low production costs. Therefore, LED transmitters are preferred in most fibre optic transmitters.
