Homework Answer on Drug Abuse, Violence, and Overcrowding in American Correctional Facilities
America is currently not the only country in the world experiencing anexponential increase in the number of inmates. Throughout the world, theprison population is growing, a fact that put a strain on governments towards not only caring for the inmates but social cohesion as well (UNODC, 2013). Estimates by UNODC put the number of incarcerated people worldwide at 10.1 million as at May 2011.
According to the US Department of Justice (DOJ), as of December 31, 2013, the US had 1,573,700 inmates held in state and federal prisons, a 0.3 percent increase from 2012 (Carson, 2014). This increase underscores the fact that there has been a surge in the number of inmates over the past few years, and with it overcrowding in the facilities, given that so far no measures are in place to cater for the increase in the number of inmates.
While overcrowding is a problem in correctional facilities, it is only a tip of the iceberg as problems such as drug abuse and violence continue to plague the facilities. The two (drug use and violence) are inherently linked with more than half of inmates involved in violent crimes and violence testing positive to drug use (Feucht & Keyser, 2009). Drug use among inmates is a growing concern given the increase in the number of prisoners reporting to using drugs.
