Homework Answer on Evolution of U.S. Counterterrorism Policies
The world has been a threatened zone especially with the presence of terror groups, such as al-Qaeda, which is based in Pakistan, Boko Aram in Nigeria, the Al-Shabaab in Somalia to mention just a few sects known to commit terrorism crimes. The U.S though regarded as the world’s most powerful country, has not been any safer. This is because the nation’s security has been challenged just like any other country’s security.
On attaining presidency, Obama had among other top priorities the desire to fight and conquer terrorism in not only America but also the world over. Years later, terrorism is still a threat to the world. This is not to say that the government is doing nothing to fight terrorism but to echo that more needs to be done. After the attacks on 9/11, the house of Congress empowered the American president to stamp out insecurity by eliminating every zone that was suspected to be al-Qaeda infested.
According to Lake (2014), if Obama wants to eventually turn down some of the astonishing powers given to him after 9-11, he must convince not only the Congress but also the American people that al-Qaeda’s threat is diminishing. In addition, there have been some efforts made to distinguish al-Qaeda from its sympathizers. This has helped in substantiating the al-Qaeda claims of its involvement in the 9/11 assault.
