Hazards in Los Angeles

Southern California is characterized by a great deal of hazards, which has seen Los Angeles being particularly labeled as a “Hazard city” (Orsi, 2014). Examples of such hazards include:

Hazards  Probability  Mitigation processes
NaturalHuman caused
Earthquakes The probability for earthquakes is high given that Los Angeles was constructed across numerous transform faults that are prone to earthquakes (Orsi, 2014).The local government can create a new legislation that requires new buildings as well as developments to be designed in a manner that withstands earthquakes (Orsi, 2014).
Tsunamis The high probability for submarine earthquakes is likely to trigger tsunamis (Orsi, 2014). The city government should put in place action plans to deal with immediate and post-effects of a tsunami (Orsi, 2014).
Landslides The probability is high given that there is a growing interaction of various other hazards as well as urbanization effects (Orsi, 2014). The local government should mitigate the interaction of other hazards and control urbanization activities such as deforestation and artificial channeling of rivers (Orsi, 2014).
Heavy rains that increase flood risks Regular winter storms and strong winds increase the probability of heavy rains that perpetuate severe surface runoffs (Orsi, 2014).Large dams that can hold a huge amount of water should be constructed while on the other hand preventing deforestation and bush fires to prevent surface runoff (Orsi, 2014).
Drought The long regular dry summers increases the probability of severe droughts that exert significant pressure on the inadequate water supplies (Orsi, 2014).The city government has established various reservoir projects that are expected to double the amount of water stored during the rainy season (Orsi, 2014).
CrimeThe probability of crime is high given that there is a growing criminal gang network operating within the city (Orsi, 2014).New moves that can increase community policing should be implemented (Orsi, 2014).
Immigrant issuesRapid growth of the Los Angeles metropolitan has the potential to attract a huge number of immigrants (Orsi, 2014).Stressing on legal procedures when admitting new immigrants into the city can help address various immigrant issues including racial discrimination during employment (Orsi, 2014).
HousingIncreased immigration increases the probability for affordable housing crisis (Orsi, 2014).The city government should control immigration as well as issue immigrants with regular jobs, which will enable them to move out of overcrowded living environments and occupy affordable suburbs (Orsi, 2014).
Urban sprawlThe probability of urban sprawl is high given that there is a rapid construction of edge cities that spread to former farmlands (Orsi, 2014).Urban development should be controlled to prevent complete loss of agricultural land (Orsi, 2014).
Medical problemsUrban expansion, immigration and lack of formal employment increases the probability of cardiovascular, sexually transmitted and infectious diseases (Orsi, 2014).The city government should ensure that people are living in healthy conditions as well as work in collaboration with healthcare workers to educate people on how they can avoid contracting infectious diseases (Orsi, 2014).

In conclusion, it is obvious that Los Angeles is characterized by a great deal of natural and human-caused hazards that can be mitigated with significant intervention from the local government, city developers and healthcare workers.
