Exploring Majors

Santa Monica University has a lot of programs to offer individuals interested in pursuing higher education. Some of them include Communication, Nursing, Computer Science, Music, and Philosophy. I am currently enrolled in the Business Administration program. It is branched into departments like accounting, insurance, business, and automotive technology. The school is chartered to provide students qualified with associate degrees, certificates of achievement, and department certificates.

 The main courses offered that I will take in this program include marketing, management, logistics, law, finance, and accounting. Students enrolled in this program are required to pick one area of concentration of their interest. The business programs in Santa Monica University are designed to empower people interested in business ownership, management, and careers in various industries. Organizational responsibilities such as budgeting, planning, supply-chain management, staffing, and supervising are developed from courses in the Business Administration program.

I am interested in pursuing Business Administration at either University of Southern California (USC) or Loyola Marymount University (LMU). To attain qualification for the two, I am required to get merit in several business programs at SMU. Some of the major ones include:

As it can be noted, students at SMU take a variety of general courses in business and later on choose those what they would like to specialize. Taking general ones enables us to be well-rounded, as we can master and apply knowledge from other business-related fields.

Exploring Careers

My aspiration in life is to become a Human Resource Practitioner (HR), and hopefully, get promoted to the management post in the same area. HR deals with the administration of the human population as a resource in the organization. This management entails several crucial functions. Under payroll administration, the practitioners are responsible for producing checks, taxes, and managing vacation or employee sick time. They handle employee benefits like health insurance and allowances. They are responsible for hiring and firing clients, conducting background, and exit interviews, and training new members. They also conduct performance appraisals to determine rewards, wage reviews, conflict resolution, and management of office policies. They are tasked with the responsibility of developing new approaches to management, work design, career development, communication management, and organizational mobility. With a degree in business administration, some of the other possible job titles include Management Trainee, Account Manager, and Business Development Executive

The initial qualification for a career in HR was a diploma in the field but due to increase in competition in the market, the basic requirement rose to attaining a degree.  Most states require for practitioners to gain qualification of getting certificates from specifically chartered institutes in the field. HR firm owners are also needed to get state licenses to allow them to work. Several employers or those wishing to go higher in rank are required to get accredited qualification from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.

The standard salary range for a practitioner in Los Angeles, inclusive of benefits varies between $40 and $70 dollars annually. The hourly rate varies from between $25 to $45. According to the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics, this career is on average demand with a growing competing field. However, people pursuing this career are assured of employment due to the range of knowledge they possess in the business area, and because all organizations require the HR department to function.

Overall Discussion

This paper is an exploration of possible personal majors and career projects. I am enrolled in the Business Administration program, intending to pursue a career in Human Resource. I conducted an online research to get the basic understanding of the job; then I made an appointment with different practitioners to get the view of those already in the field. The research process left me with mixed emotions about my decision. It affirmed to me that HR is a comfortable area to work in and has a relatively good wage. I was confused because I have a passion for dancing, and looking at the nature of the work; I may be unable to pursue separately my dream of becoming a dancer. A comparison between the two indicates that HR is more marketable and financially rewarding than dancing. Particularly for a relatively new foreigner like me living and studying in the United States.

I believe that Human Resource may not be a good fit for me academically because I am more inclined towards Arts as compared to Business Studies. I was born and raised in Morocco, meaning there are several aspects of how business is conducted in the United States that I still have to understand before being comfortable in learning the subjects. I am deficient in sciences, but excellent in languages, whereas this course entails some complicated economic and mathematical courses that am required to undertake. The elaborate courses do not raise any excitement towards this program.

A career in HR requires several skills like computer proficiency, database management, managerial, and internal skills. A HR Practitioner is needed to be up to date with organizational policies and laws and be conversant with the psychology of handling people. An individual also needs to have good communication skills and be free from biasness.

I found this career exciting mainly because of the aspect of dealing with people. Instead of crunching numbers all day long, a HR practitioner is concerned about the wellbeing of employees in an organization. It is also an exciting career because the officers are tasked with the responsibility of creating organizational development. It is their job to ensure they find new ways to promote progress for example by finding new strategies to motivate employees. I was also intrigued by the enormous responsibility of the department in instilling the office work culture. HR sets the tone of the said culture because they are the primary enforcers of the office laws and policies. For example, the department allows for its employees to have a “dress down Friday” culture policy in which they’re allowed to dress in a casual manner. It is their work to ensure office procedures are followed and are part of the formulation team.

Some of the HR aspects I disliked were related to the nature of the work. First, I found it tiring to handle the payroll process and thought it was more suitable under the accounts department. I was also put off by the long working hours and lack of flexibility in the career. Thirdly, I was surprised by how the HR department is linked to all other departments. For example, in accounting they do the payroll, in administration they determine logistics, and in management, they formulate policies and ensure that are met by other employees. I also disliked the aspect of having to fire people.

Conclusion

This project was useful in helping me learn more about the career am interested in pursuing. It shed light on the requirements and having a personal interaction with people already in the field aided me in knowing what to expect in the real world. I chose Human Resource because it was more aligned towards my personality and courses that I am comfortable handling. However, the research indicated that it can be a grueling career, and am still required to take some hard courses. To seek further insight and advice, I will enroll in a counseling class to meet with a career counselor. Even though I may be comfortable taking the course, for now, the counselor will assist me to get to a position where there is no doubt as to what I want to pursue. The information I found on Bridges.com was more user-friendly and student-oriented than use of YouTube. The latter suits a more general audience while browsing through the former site was easier and gave specific details. Choosing the right career path should be done with ultimate precaution, and with a lot of personal insight reviewing individual abilities, passions, strengths, and weaknesses. I pictured myself as a HR specialist ten years to come but because my vision was blurred, I will enroll in a counseling class to see an academic counselor.
