Hazing involves the performance of behaviors and rituals that involve humiliation, mistreatment or even harassment to individuals or groups, as a means of initiation into a group. It is a situation or an action that may or may not involve the consent of the participants, which may endanger the physical, health, or mental safety of students. Hazing practices have few or no values in an organization’s culture. Hazing has often been thought as an embarrassing or violent act of secrecy.
It includes some form of ridiculous and malicious acts of physical activities. Most people view hazing as time specific acts that do not have consequences. These descriptions have served as rites of passages that most students experiences as a result of their involvement with sororities and fraternities. Hazing experiences have replaced the membership rites of many individuals are oppressive and violent and they have distorted fraternal organization’s goals. They have distorted membership processes’ purposes and hence have value in organizations’ culture.
Hazing rites have no place in organizational life. These rites are in most cases exploitive and violent. As a result, hazing rituals have been publicly banned by national organizations and they are illegal in most states. The habit has been considered to be an adherence to power, tradition, and oppression. Oppressors use rites of passage as a means of obtaining and maintaining power to control their subjects. These oppressors are usually resistant to evolution and change and they believe that is important in maintaining the system.
