Homework Answer on “The Happiness Advantage”

The Happiness Advantage is a book written by human potential consultant and former Harvard professor Shawn Achor. The book’s main thesis is centered on the theme of positive psychology, its effects, its pillars, and how to manipulate it. According to the author, happiness is the key to sustaining and achieving a successful life in all facets of our livelihoods (Achor 16).

In his hypothesis, he posits that success is a subset of happiness. Rather than our common perception that success brings happiness, Shawn attempts to show that happiness is the precursor to attaining success socially, professionally, culturally, economically, and psychologically (Achor 30). Therefore, the main thesis of the book is that happiness is a psychological tool that can be used, manipulated, and influenced to improve our different facets of life.

In this context, Shawn uses seven major principles to define factors through which we can manage to change our lives to lead happy lives, from which other successes would trickle. The seven principles are; the happiness advantage, the Tetris effect, the Zorro circle, the 20-second rule, social investment, the fulcrum and the lever, and the falling up. Each of these principles represents a technique that we can use to promote a happy feeling and effect to our welfare and livelihoods.
