Homework Answer on Mitochondria in Plants
The mitochondrion is an organelle found both in plants and animals, or sometimes fungi. It is a membrane organelle and it is often referred to as cellular power plants due to its functions characterized by the presence of three membranes, which include outer, inner and the intermembrane space (Seravin, 1993). The primary function of a mitochondrion is respiration where it involves in breaking down of molecules into smaller units in a set of metabolic pathways to release energy (Jacoby et al, 2012).
The organelle generates adenosine triphosphate (ATP) which is used as a source of chemical energy which helps in cellular differentiation resulting in cell growth. In plants, mitochondria, the energy is used to support the photosynthetic process in the leaves with the presence of light. It supports the cell structure by providing energy that it has acquired by breaking down the molecules.
The organelle is mostly instituted in eukaryotic cells that formulate plants and animals. It is located in the cytoplasm in the plant cell that it surrounds the central vacuole and the nucleus part of the cell. Mitochondrion only provides the necessary energy in the tissue and it does not interact with other organelle (Jacoby et al, 2012). This is because it contains an independent genome that helps the organelle to function solely without interacting with the other organelles. Mitochondria have been associated with human disease such as mitochondrial disorders, Alpers, cardiac dysfunction and the aging process.
