United Airlines Flight 173 was involved in an accident on December 28, 1978. The accident involved a McDonnell Douglas DC-8-61 turbofan powered airplane operated by United Airlines (Zerschling, 2010). Investigations discovered that while the aircraft was approaching Portland International Airport it experienced a landing gear malfunction indication and could not determine if the landing gear had been safely extended.
