Interest groups have the mandate to influence policy goals in various ways including lobbying the government, participating in election activities, and educating the public. Although public policy in the U.S. is informed by various sources, the question on whether the government bypasses the public to favor those wealthy elites and interest groups with huge financial backing has always been raised. Numerous reports on survey data reveal that an increasing number of Americans are sure that the government operates to favor a few large interests instead of minding the benefit of all (Berry, 2015).
The U.S. government policy is a reflection of the desires of the wealthy more than the average citizens. It is estimated that proposed changes in public policy with a relatively low support among the wealthy will be adopted in only 18% of the time while another with a higher support among the group will be adopted in almost 45% of the time (Gilens& Page, 2014). According to Fuentes-Nieva and Galasso (2014), in the various cases that the “regular people” obtained the targeted policy outcome, it was as a result of the intervention by the economic elites rather than by their own doing.
The ordinary citizens lack a substantial power over the public policy decisions. Changing the election system so that the influence of money is minimized could improve the democratic state of public affairs. This is because the economic elite that represent major business interests will not have a substantial impact on the government policies. It is predicted that such a strategy would ensure the “regular people” have an independent influence on the public policies.
