Homework Answer on Self-ethnography
- How did your family come to be in the USA? When? Why?
My family came to the USA for a short visit to one of our relatives eleven years ago. My parents and siblings liked the place, and we decided to stay longer and seek the US citizenship.
- What was their work experience? Have the types of jobs changed through the generation? Family’s standard of living up/down over time? Why?
It was hard to get decent employment since the regulations were too strict, for instance, it was hectic to get a work permit, and most companies were unwilling to hire foreigners. At first, my parents would do casual jobs which did not pay well, but they have since progressed and managed to be in formal employment. Initially, it was hard to sustain the entire family with the meager salary, but today we have stabilized.
- How has the family structure and the roles of men and women changed? Family closer or more dispersed?
The family structure has changed significantly since some of my siblings have become independent and even take care of some of us who are still in school.
