Homework Answer on Population Problem

  1. What are/were the pressures on foragers to keep their populations small? What were some of the methods that groups have used (and may have also been used prehistorically)?

According to the chapter, foragers were forced to control or keep their populations small because too many people had negative implications such as depletion of resources, shortage of food, and deterioration of the environment. A large population of people was also accompanied by frequent wars and high levels of poverty. Groups have used various methods to control the increasing global population.

One of the methods used is birth control, which is more of a natural method. People reduced the number of children that were born. The other method that helped reduce the number of children born is family-planning programs, which is more of an artificial method that involves the use of contraceptives.

  1. Why did population grow in/after the Neolithic?

There was drastic population growth during and after the Neolithic, and this is attributed to the emergence of settled village life that was based on domesticated plants and animals. The settled life enhanced man’s productivity and this led to growth in population.

When tribal societies came under the influence of commercial states, there was development of commercially organized culture.
