Research Paper Help on Values, Morals and Ethics – for Life, Work and Service

Ethics, morals and values are a requirement for a successful community. Ethics is about acting depending on one’s belief. It can also be defined as acting in relation to an individual’s professionalism (Hoban, 2012).  Morals are what people judge others on. They are the determination of what is good and what is bad according to the societal set standards. Values on the other hand are the set of rules the society uses to make decisions on what is right or wrong, good or bad, should and should not (Johnson et. al, 2010). Values express to the society the things that are less or more important. Since the Church and the State are clearly differentiated, the development of clear ethical, moral and values are heavily based on the individual. However, the media, government, corporations, sciences, the community and the church play a role in determining and sustaining society’s values.

The media has an immense impact on determining and sustaining a society’s values. In today’s society, mass media offers a permanent and continuous flow of data, ideas as well as facts. When mass media transmits this information, certain meanings that build a certain image concerning the world are input into the minds of individuals. Such information influences the way people think giving them a particular “cognitive map” (Jo & Gardner, 2013). Mass media influences individual’s opinions either negatively or positively. It also influences people’s behaviors, social norms, mentalities, as well as values, which in turn contribute to a decreased or increased level of knowledge. Presently, mass media is slowly becoming the main agent that shape’s the values, opinions, and their thinking. The impact of the internet, advertisements, radio programs, TV, and movies are playing a huge role in determining what is important and valued in the life of an individual (Tamborini, 2013).

Individuals at the work place are governed by values, which determine what should and should not be done within the company. Every corporation has its own set of values, which are used as a clear guide on how to behave. In addition, corporations encourage individuals to do their jobs professionally, on time, and perfectly. This has a huge influence on what an individual identifies as valuable in their work place. The vision and mission statements in corporations influence the behavior of workers.  On the other hand, scientists have had a huge influence on the behavior of individuals in the world today. For instance, there has been a series of research on food, diseases, and life expectancy of humans, which has had an impact in the way people behave and what they value (Johnson et. al, 2010). A good example is the research on obesity, which has led to many people going for regular exercises while some have opted for adopting diet plans.

Different communities have different norms and set of beliefs in relation to their cultures. For instance, some communities value the basic unit of a society-family, freedom of individuals, money or even security. Other communities such as the Romanian value hospitality while the Americans value freedom. This has influenced these two communities to behave and act the way they do, and even pass it on to their generations. Cultural beliefs and activities shape the behavior, attitude, and beliefs of a person.

With its basis on the Bible, the church teaches individuals on what is right and wrong. A church is a place known for correcting, rebuking, teaching, and positive influence. In the past, individuals who went to church were considered to be well behaved with extremely good morals. Despite the fact that this is no longer the norm, the church still remains to be a positive influence on individuals and the society.  The church encourages generosity, courage, honor, and authenticity into the lives of people thus influencing their behavior.

The government of a nation is responsible for maintaining law and order. It ensures that individuals who obey the law are fully protected while the ones who are rebellious are punished. A national government ensures that there is equity across all state boundaries thus encouraging peace within a country. The government influences individuals towards maintaining tranquility in life and living life in a dignified manner. According to the outlined government laws, life is sacred and should be protected dearly at all times. In addition, the law must be observed by everybody in a nation, whether rich or poor. Government embraces equality on all its citizens at all times.

In conclusion, the way an individual behaves, what he or she considers right or wrong, is entirely his or her decision. However, there are other external factors, which influence how one behaves and considers good or bad. Such factors include the church, government, corporations, sciences, and media. Media is what ensures constant flow of information all over the world, influencing how individuals think (www.youtube.com). Corporations, on the other hand have their own set of values, which govern the behavior of individuals. The Church also has a huge influence since its main role is to spread the good news and ensuring that its followers embrace the right attitudes.  The government ensures that laws and orders are strictly followed by individuals in a nation. It also ensures that there is justice within a community. The community, on the other hand has its own sets of beliefs that influence the behavior of individuals.
