Use of Nursing Theory to Guide DNP Projects

Nursing theories are used by scientist and practitioners to explain conditions in the medical field. In most cases, some of the diseases or situations are not apprehensible from the face value; therefore theories are very crucial at this stage because they help to fathom the ordeal. For our case we will use environmental theory by Florence nightingale to attend to a patient in an Emergency Room. Application of this theory in an emergency room facilitates the first aid services given by the practitioner to the patient. On the other hand, nurses are careful and dedicated to improve the environment surrounding an emergency situation.

Environment Theory by Florence Nightingale

The purpose of environmental theory in an emergency room is to sensitize the importance of maintaining cleanliness. This is because of the fact that unsanitary conditions in the emergency room will definitely lead to infection to the patients (Parker & Smith, 2010). Some of the environmental components that enhance or hinder efforts of nurses to maintain sanitation conditions include light, noise, effluvia, warmth and ventilation. Good lighting, ventilation and warm environment will facilitate emergency services while noise and effluvia are destructive to the process. These components may emanate from social, physical and psychological environment. The theory is built on the concept of giving the patient appropriate first aid in a friendly environment. This concept concentrates on the environmental factors that surround emergency services. In a situation where the patient is not accorded the right medication at the site of the accident, he or she may be infected by the external environment or the hospital agents. Emergency safety is a two way affair where the nurse attending the patient, put on protective measures while the patient safety is enhanced by attending to him or her in a clean environment.

 Reparative process for the patient can only be improved through cleanliness, quite environment, fresh air, good diet and warmth. Environmental theory includes issues to do with psychological, social and physical conditions of the patient (Fawcett & Desanto-Madeya, 2013). Emergency rescue services for patients who have been affected by the trauma of being involved in the accident, needs a lot of support from these components. Social contacts and psychological supports are some of the contributing factors to the reparative process. On the other hand, the theory assumes that the process of reparative is proportional to the environmental condition. This is to say that the speed at which the process progress with, is affected by the level of cleanliness accorded to the patient. This leaves out other factors that may be intrinsic such as the depth of damage caused to the patient during the ordeal. The theory is also conjured on very simple concept such as patient analogy.

Simplicity discourse ensures that all the practitioners understand the process in a manner that they conduct their business at ease. Accessibility is one of the components that define the empirical perspective of the discourse (Alligood & Martha Raile, 2013). Therefore, it outlines the procedures followed in the event of creating a favorable environment and controlling factors that may hinder effective treatment. Destructive factors need to be avoided by nurses at all times. Lastly, the theory is relevant to health service delivery due to the following reasons. It relates to internal and external environment that influences the patient and nurses in various ways. The projects will have to create a harmonious encounter between the two environments in order for the process to be effective.
