Effective Change Management

Successful managers are always working on ways to change their organizations in terms of responsibilities and priorities. For them, status quo is not a preference. According to Cummings and Worley (2005), managing change in organizations can be achieved through five distinct steps. These stages include:

  1. Motivating change
  2. Creating a vision
  3. Developing political support
  4. Managing transition
  5. Sustaining momentum

In motivating change, a leader can set a guideline for change by convincing the members on the need to change. Creating a vision involves having a clear vision of what the organization is striving to achieve. Leaders should strive to convince members on how their vision would improve the organization. Developing political support necessitates leaders to identify the key stakeholders so that they can be influenced to support changes and ensure job security. Leaders can manage transition through planning, and being committed to planning to move the organization to the desired future status. Sustaining momentum requires the leader to reinforce new behaviors, provide support system and develop new skills to handle tasks.

When Apple lost Steve Jobs, its co-founder, the company’s stock price dropped by 25% with a year, which made investors began to question the company’s management (Gustin, 2013). However, investors have begun reaping benefits after receiving first cash dividends in 2012.  Although some customers have turned to the rival companies, such as Samsung, who have come up with better and cheaper smart phone than iPhone, the new iPhone has made customers flock in Apple stores. To the employees, the loss of Steve Jobs was the end of motivational change. Although Steve Jobs encouraged leadership, Tim Cook has laid emphasis on teamwork.   

Although each leader has different methods of leadership, Tom Cook has excelled where Steve Jobs could not. He has made Apple a social company with improved working conditions in overseas plants. Developing a political support should be Cook’s priority while endeavoring to sustain momentum is crucial for the company’s stakeholders. If Cook could borrow from Cummings and Worley, he can manage to instill change that would make the company rise to its usual status.
