Introduction

Scientists define global warming as the imbalance of temperature within the earth’s atmosphere and its water bodies. This is due to the interference of human activities on the climate. The amount of greenhouse gases emitted to the environment from industries, machines, and chemical reactions has contributed to the constant changes in earth’s climate. Thus the absorption and increased retaining power of these gases into the atmosphere, has resulted to an increase in temperatures that warm the planet earth. Scientists have carried out numerous research and provided data and facts to prove that global warming is real and continues to permanently change the earth’s climate.

Issues in global warming

Therefore, the effects of global warming seem to be more evident than it is assumed. Some of the causes of global warming include; the extreme weather conditions in various parts of the planet. The redistribution of heat temperature around the globe has resulted to some continents being too hot while others are too hot. According to Meagan Gannon(17) scientists attributed the drought experienced in California and the floods in Colorado both to global warming.

In accordance to Planck’s law of radiation, the temperature of an object will depend on the frequency and wavelength of the emitted radiation. Thus, the heat produced by the sun heats the earth and in turn causes a series of emission of gases from the earth’s surface. This activity contributes the uneven supply of atmospheric gases with varying frequencies and energy. Consequently, there is the emission of green house gases, which make up at least 2% of the gases in the atmosphere.  Moreover, these gases have the ability to concentrate energy at longer wavelengths, thus making it possible for the gases to keep the earth’s atmosphere at least 33k warmer as opposed to other gases.

However, human activities also contribute to the emission of certain gases that have contributed to global warming. A good example is the increased use of fossil fuel that has led to the amount of CO2 concentration in the atmosphere to increase. CO2 in most parts of the world has been on a rapid increase since the year 1958. It is noted that between the years 1958 to 2011 the amount of CO2 concentrated in the atmosphere increases at a rate of 2ppm every year (1). In addition to this, the emission of these gases due to man as documented in the years 2009 and 2010, stands at 33.5 billion tons per year (2). There is also a current rapid decrease in the pH of large water bodies (4). This is because the high atmospheric pressure of CO2 influences the amount of CO2 that is being absorbed and released by the oceans (3). Thus, oceans are only able to absorb more CO2 than they release into the atmosphere.


The effects of the increasing amount of CO2 and other gases on the earth’s atmosphere are mainly associated to their energy. Link 5 below and the above diagram describe the impact of varying wavelengths in long wave spectrum. For instance, CO2 is believed to be absorbing at a small band that is centered at a frequency of approximately 667 cycles per centimeters and shoulders stretching past 700 cycles per centimeters. This only goes to how much impact CO2 has on the energy balance of the earth’s planet.

Other human contributing factors of global warming mainly include the release of methane into the atmosphere. This is mainly because of landfills and agricultural activities such as grazing of animals, which in turn release methane from their digestive system. Methane is relatively viewed among the worst green house gases and has a great impact on the environment. Regardless of its low quantities in the atmosphere, methane is assumed to surpass carbon dioxide as a global warming contributor gas. Cutting down of trees is also a contributing factor to global warming since forests tend to store more CO2 (Gannon 17).

In link 4, there is a graphic image of the black body emission curve that occurs on the earth and the position at which specific greenhouse gases absorb radiation from (figure 7&8).

Conclusion

The loss of value and respect towards nature and the surrounding environment acts as the main catalyst to global warming and therefore should be evaluated. Thus, it is important that in all decision making, preservation of nature should be a priority in fighting global warming. Global warming is mainly attributed to the impact of temperature changes within the atmosphere. Thus, human beings seem to be contributing to this at a greater length than the natural causes. The emission of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere influences the energy released and absorbed in the surroundings therefore causing global warming. The effects of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere are often discussed in terms of the equivalent amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere.
