Dear Governor,

The American Lung Association in liaison with the community of Chicago will hold a rally in support of Cigarette Tax Increase Bill (CTIB) outside the Illinois’s state Capital Springfield, on Friday, April 24, 2015. It will be a great honour if you take part in this awareness program scheduled for10 AM. The press conference is expected to take place at 12 noon later on the same day.

The CTIB advocates for an increase in taxes on all the tobacco products. Considering the fact that cigarette smoking poses serious health problems such as cancer (CDC, “Health Effects of Cigarette Smoking”) the increase in taxes would reduce the use of tobacco especially among the youth in Illinois. As part of the awareness program, cessation coverage will also be advocated for. This would include advocating for cessation treatments by insurance companies and state governments through private and public insurance plans (American Lung Association, “Preventing Smoking”) Furthermore, the rally will also focus on the importance of tobacco prevention programs in schools considering that this is a very vulnerable age. As part of this awareness program, it will be necessary to for school children to be taught the dangers of smoking. Additionally, the bill could also include limiting minors’ right to use to tobacco products. 12.49 billion dollars was spent on advertising tobacco in 2006 (Emedicinehealth, “cigarette smoking”). As such, money could be spent more on antismoking advocacy programs.

We have admired your exemplary leadership and commitment to overarching issues like substance use that mostly affects the young generation. As such, we would be grateful if you join us to increase awareness about cigarette smoking on this day to the public.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
