Visual Representation: A Response Paper

The use of visual methods such as graphs and tables to represent information is one of the best ways to improve information readability and ease of understanding. Graphical information provides much needed visual appeal for any given set of data (Braithwaite & Goldstone, 2013). Different forms of graphical representation function effectively for different sets of data. For instance, as Midiri reports in her essay, pie charts are suitable for representing information where comparisons have to be made between parts of a whole. They are however unsuitable for cross temporal comparisons. The example given of different expenditures as parts of a whole budget perfectly suits the intended purpose. Another example may be the number of people infected with a terminal disease out of an entire population sample.

In addition to the budget, another example given is that of an ‘umbrella’ disease or disorder which has more than one strains. The prevalence of the various strains of the disease could be represented in a pie chart successfully. This example is also suitable.

Having initially described the different roles of a bar chart and a pie chart, Midiri should have given examples of bar chart applications. For instance, in comparing HIV/ AIDS prevalence rates across various years, a bar chart would prove suitable. Another example of a situation where a bar chart may be applicable is in comparing the prevalence rates of different diseases in a given population. For instance, we may need to compare the rates of Bilharzia infection to that of cholera infection. Since these two are not parts of a whole, the most suitable method would be through the use of a bar chart.

The importance of visual representation is therefore undeniable.
