Quality Management Evolution

The history of quality movement draws its origin back to medieval Europe, when artisans started organizing themselves into unions known as guilds in the late 13th century. The industrialized world tended to follow artisans model in the 19th century and later developed it into a factory system with an aim of inspecting the product. The manufacturers started including quality processes in quality practices in the early 20th century.  Joseph M. Juran and W. Edwards Deming pioneered most implementation. The revolution of the Quality management has resulted in several benefits. Most companies globally compete for Excellence Awards, therefore production of quality products.  

Companies are adopting several strategies to ensure success of quality system. They include; planning strategies that focuses on eliminating the main problem faced by the company as it ensures establishment of strategic base on the concept of total quality management. Some companies are coming up with education programmes involving many people and their views taken into account. Education ensures development of teamwork among employees providing them with problem identification and solving skills. Management leadership is another strategy enforced by some companies. Considered the most influential Total Quality element, leadership influences other elements of the organization. In addition, some companies enforce resource management and communication platforms as their strategies.

Six Sigma is a business strategy that identifies and eliminates the causes of failures in business processes by focusing on outputs considered important to customers (Pyzdek 25). Its implementation has both merits and demerits. Some pros associated with its implantation include; focusing on achievement of measurable and quantifiable financial returns of a company since the project is never approved before the definition of a problem; it also utilizes the techniques for problem fixing in a sequential order; because of its focus on systematic implementation, proved statistical tools are encouraged.

The greatest con associated with Six Sigma is the challenge on ways of finding good quality data especially where there is no data available. Prioritization is also an issue as it is factor determining whether the six sigma program succeeds or fails. Finally, there are no standard procedures in the certification process, hence, inconsistency across different companies (Pyzdek 26).
