Correctional facilities are developed for the benefit of the majority of the population. However, there are certain limits which, when surpassed bring trouble instead of improving the situation on the ground.

One of the things that prisons can brag to have done is to reduce the number of criminals. The prison sentence given to guilty culprits ha been crucial in reducing criminal activities. In the prisons, the inmates undergo rehabilitation services that transform them into useful beings in the society. In addition, the inmates teach certain skills that can keep them occupied to prevent them from engaging in criminal activities. The step has been paramount in helping inmates who resolve to criminal activities like theft and drug abuse due to financial constraints. The skills learnt could be used for income generation after serving prison sentences.

The use of imprisonment as a form of correction has resulted in a major problem of overcrowding. Overcrowding is a concern for the US because of its effects on the government and the prisoners. There was a friend who, after serving a two-year sentence for theft complained about how people’s health is compromised. There are deaths that occur as a result of malnutrition due to the reliance on additional food from relatives because the budget allocation does not increase proportionately with the inmates.
