The OHSA (2012) Act on health and safety in print shops provides the basis for determination of hazards in a print shop. The basis given can be said to be founded on the principles of the “fault tree analysis” procedure which includes setting the system boundaries, understanding the system in question, and defining the top events (Marshall, 2012).

According to ILO (1998), the hazards found in a printing shop are divided into various categories such as accident, physical, biological, ergonomic, and chemical hazards. The accident hazard category comprises most of the hazards associated with the use of various machines. Accident hazards in a printing shop include falls, blows, and contusions from moving machinery, as well as hits from falling objects, entanglements between rollers and cylinders, cuts and amputations from cutting machines such as guillotines, burns from binding machines, lacerations on hands and fingers, and electrocution. Chemical hazards mainly arise from ink spillages, lead poisoning, and dermatitis due to exposure to printing inks, while ergonomic hazards include fatigue, eye strain and stress.

The OHSA Act also lists the hazards that can be encountered in a print shop based on four criteria: physical, chemical, biological, and psychosocial hazards. These hazards are described thus: the physical hazards include accident hazards outlined by the ILO, as well as others such as extreme temperatures, ionizing radiations, confined spaces, and repetitive motions. In addition to the already cited examples of chemical hazards, there are also dust, mist, and vapors, as well as gases. Biological hazards are said to include blood and other body fluids, while ergonomic and psychosocial hazards also include harassment and poor working conditions (OHSA, 2012). The need for safety precaution in a print shop is therefore undeniable, given this broad range of hazards and risks.
