Introduction

Smoke exposure is one of the leading causes of death the world over. The smoke in several cases is generated from cooking stoves and fireplaces that serve to prepare our meals. There is a growing concern on the number of deaths and sicknesses attributed to smoke. It is estimated that there are over two million premature deaths due to smoke related illnesses. This presents a challenge for many health providers not just here in the US but all over the world.

The high number of deaths due to smoke and related illnesses can be avoided if the major cause, which is smoke, is removed from the equation. The solution involves the use of cleaner stoves and fuels that do not emit smoke or do so in a lesser quantity. It is imperative that households that rely on stoves and cooking places that emit a lot of smoke shift to newer safer, healthier and much less risky sources of fuel.

How is the Innovation Produced?

The smokeless stove uses a unique design to channel all the smoke outside through an effective vent. The opening is a conical funnel that drives all the smoke through it and safely out of the place. The smoke flows out using convectional currents. It has enough inlets to allow enough air into the combustion chamber to ensure the fuel is completely burnt and consumed (Orozco-Levi, 2006, p. 543). There is a large opening where the fuel is placed and the cooking vessel placed over it. The entire contraption is covered well enough to ensure there is no loss of heat from it.

The cooker is made out of basic and readily available materials. It mainly utilises clay, a steel pipe for the vent and a steel plate for the base. The small number of items required makes it relatively cheap and easy for locals to build. The design is such that the efficiency is quite high meaning little fuel goes to waste. The unique simple design makes it durable and easy to repair in case of an accident. The compact design makes it very easy to move around too.

There are already field trials being carried in parts of the world where the problem is rampant. These countries include India, Guatemala and Kenya. The work done in the field shows how effective the innovations are and the impact they have on the people using them. This means improvements can be made and tested to show just how effective the innovations have been on reducing the amount of smoke produced.

The level of pollution in some areas of the world is extremely high. Cooking in such conditions is always high risk. Still, there has been a very slow adoption of the technology. In countries like India, the technology was introduced over 30 years ago but it has only reached up to 5% of the rural population (Pandey et al., 1999, p. 338). The cause may be due to lack of knowledge or just plain ignorance. The cheap price does not help to improve matters. The social workers have an uphill task to popularise the innovation.

Status of Innovation Today

Adoption of cleaner stoves and sources of fuel will impact our society greatly. First, many of the deaths that occur are women, children and premature babies. The loss of life is a huge stumbling block to society. Loss of life should not be tolerated no matter the case. This means that the members of society should avoid using fuels that are known to produce a lot of smoke (Gamser, Appleton & Carter, 1990, p. 15). Many lives can be saved by encouraging the use of smokeless cleaner fuels.

The best way to go about this is to encourage new designs for cooking stoves. These designs should not be responsible for producing copious amounts of smoke. There is also a chance of improving on the designs of existing stoves such that they release lesser amounts of smoke. It is important that the people be able to get access to these new designs and improvements otherwise, they will be useless. For the better part, people need to be encouraged to adopt the new designs that will improve their lives tremendously.

The new cleaner smokeless stoves will also have a positive impact on the environment. There will be a significant reduction in the amount of greenhouse gases emitted from the innovations. The improved designs benefit the environment as more people adopt them and thus lessen the greenhouse effect. On the other hand, the dependency on natural resources will be reduced (Pandey et al., 2000, p. 317). The people will be less inclined to consume more of the smoke-generating sources of fuel.

Conclusion

            The smokeless stove is a valuable tool to combating smoke related illnesses. It will improve the public health of its users tremendously, thus, should be adopted swiftly. The benefits of the stove in when looked at from the health perspective are too many to ignore. The innovation is one of a kind and very helpful.
