Criminal Justice Essay Paper on How did Terrorism Succeed

How did Terrorism Succeed

Introduction

Terrorism is the use of intimidation and violence to pursue political needs. It incorporates threats that are intended to create fear that is perpetrated for religious, ideological, and economic goal. The deliberate target of terrorism is to disregard safety of the non-combatants such as the civilians. Terrorism has become controversial when it incorporates the state authorities who are supported by the government to delegitimize political and other opponents. Because of such violence, the state is forced to involve armed forces against its rivals. The purpose of this paper is to depict how terrorism activity becomes successful in society. Terrorism is an application of force is described as terror by people who lack interest in the state affairs (Baer 52). The objective of terrorist activities is to exploit human fear to achieve individual or goals of a particular country.

How Terrorism Succeeded

There are various factors that contributed to the success of terrorism. Motivation of terrorism is part of them and this is evident when the attacks on collaborators are enforced to intimidate citizens. In return, these individuals decline to coordinate with the state in order to undermine the control of the country. The strategy became successful in countries such as Ireland, Algeria, and Kenya. This was during the time when the nations were struggling to attain independence. Terrorism has also succeeded through attacks that are directed to high profile symbolic targets. This incited counter-terrorism by a nation to polarize its population. It is sad to note that the victims who are affected by these terrorists’ activities are the innocent civilians in a state. Terrorism is also a common approach that was applied by Al Qaeda during their attack that took place on September 2001, which was targeted to invade the United States. It is clear that these terrorism attacks are successful when their objective is to draw international attention that undermines struggles of a state.

Study indicates that terrorist organization do not choose terrorism to attain its political effectiveness. This implies that the victory of terrorists’ activities is motivated by a desire for social solidarity. Additionally, this incorporates other members of their organization rather than the strategic objectives or political platforms that are mostly undefined. Based on the views that are given by some terrorists, these terror campaigns have succeeded because they are induced by revenge against nations that do not abide by their actions. Terrorism operation has succeeded when criminals hide behind religion with wrong motives of destroying others. Apparently, groups such as Jihad that target individuals who go astray of their beliefs facilitate this.

Another aspect that indicates why terrorism succeeds is that the Federal Bureau of Investigation FBI also supports their activities. A good example is in United States when they provided approximately 150 individuals with bombs, transportation, and other tactics of executing these terrorists’ plans (Burke 64).  Reports further indicate that since September 2001, the FBI has claimed triumph in war on terror. However, every time a domestic terror suspect is arrested, the public is informed that another horrific plot has been averted. Through the investigative journalists, it is clear to the public that majority of suspects who are arrested due to terrorism could not have been part of the violence. This is if the FBI to assist them in executing such acts did not give them.

Arguments concerning the reasons why terrorism succeeds indicate that the US government is responsible for financing and hatching plenty of terrorists’ plots. In addition, research indicates that this government is the leading in contrast to other groups. For instance, while formulating a terrorism plot, the government is involved when they bomb a location with suspects whom they know. During the sting of the operations, their involvement is evident when the government ultimately prosecutes target of the sting operation. This is based on their involvement in being part of the terror activity through the actions that they take.

A section of scholars asserts that terrorism has been successful in accomplishing significant goals. The outcome is evident in groups that mount these violent actions. Terrorism being a weapon and an act of the weak, it will often not accomplish the political intentions of an organization. However, terrorists groups that are tolerated by the government of a given state always target their own citizens leading to their success. This report analyzes on organizations that rely on terrorism whose findings reveal that this success is rare at times. This is because groups have identified the objective that facilitates this form of violence (Hines 119).

The success of terrorism is evident in organizations that are rooted in nationalistic or ethnic grievances. This incorporates the colonial situations that are rated among the most successful in carrying out terrorist activities. Other groups such as religions facilitate success of terrorism and terrorists organizations. This is because they are motivated by diverse ideologies that lead to success in violence. Terrorism is also successful because it incorporates techniques that provide motivation to other groups with interest to obtain change in politics. The chances of success in terrorism can be small for weak groups who encounter powerful opponents. However, there is possibility that when such small groups continue to rely on terrorism, their plots could not turn into success.

Terrorism has turn into a frightening phenomenon and concern for various governments and citizens across the globe. If terrorism is a successful tactic that groups adopt, this means that success also come around due to terrorism (Hogan 202).

Summary

Terrorism is successful because it is motivated by political objectives. In addition, terrorists depend on violence and threat of violence hence this determines success of terror campaigns. Analyzing the issue of terrorism, another reason why it is successful is that it has a target audience and they are beyond the immediate victims. Furthermore, study indicates that terrorism is successful because it incorporates organization. This implies that terror activities are not only linked to actions of isolated people. Another reason that explains why terrorism is accomplished in various nations is that it involves a non-state actor. This person acts as a perpetrator, the target or even represents both positions during this plot.

It is also clear that the success of terrorism is evident in organizations that are rooted in nationalistic or ethnic grievances. This incorporates the colonial situations that are rated among the most successful in carrying out terrorist activities. Terrorism operation has succeeded when criminals hide behind religion with wrong motives of destroying others. Apparently, groups such as Jihad that target individuals who go astray of their beliefs facilitate this. Finally, terrorism has succeeded to pave way to different nations because it is a weapon of the weak. As a result, terrorism is designed in a way that it changes the distribution of power in a given state.
