Video Reflection: Eyes of the Storm

            1. What does the video indicate about cultural interactions locally and globally?

Set in the periods when life was full of murky waters of racism, the video depicts a scenario of discrimination that comes from various elements. Some of these issues brought out by the events of the show are those that extent to the shallow concepts of ignorance to the deeper perspectives of intentional efforts to use cultural diversity as the basis for racial discrimination. All through the exercise in the class, the teacher, Mrs. Jane Elliot strives to drive in some lessons about discrimination to the third grade students in the class. Apparently, the onset of this lesson coincides with the terrible assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. She strives to make the children have first-hand experience of the effects of discrimination by forming some sort of lesson-based discrimination forum. The first step is to assign the students with blue eyes superiority in the class by laying false, yet convincing, foundations as the basis. By giving the selected group special treatment and enabling them to gain access to more learning, the blue-eyed students indeed become superior through their actions and perform much better than their brown-eyed counterparts in class perform. When the roles are reversed, the result is the same, except that the intensity is much lower. The indication of this is the fact that the fundamental causes of discrimination lie on ignorance and escalates to pathetic levels because of unfounded stereotypes and false information that run from one generation to another.

 2. How do the experiences observed affect intercultural communication?

During the whole process, it is observed that when one group is treated differently from the others, they tend to assume the kind of situation they are placed. At first, the blue-eyed students enjoy the privileges accorded to them and proceed to look down upon their fellow students in class who are the minority. This hinders communication between them and does not give each group a chance to get to know what exactly is special about the other. When the only communication available is through stereotypes and allusions, the tendency to hold the status quo of discrimination is much higher.

6. What argument do you think the video-maker is attempting presenting and how does it relate to our becoming better at intercultural encounters?

The outstanding principle outlined in the whole process of the video is that various intercultural discriminations come about as a form of historical misconception of different people, development of disprovable stereotypes and the subsequent loss of communication as a result of the rifts between cultures. As such, it is worth noting that the two sections of the student did not act superior to the others because they actually are superior, but because they were made to believe so through privileges and ideas, they acquired from the teacher. The video, thus, seeks the indulgence of all people, before forming opinions on other cultures, to learn about the individuals in order to avoid ungrounded bases for discrimination.
