What I Learned from Leadership

Transformational leadership describes the style of leadership that I prefer. It involves making conscious changes in both individuals and social systems in such a way that positive and valuable change occurs within the system and among the followers. Moreover, the fact that transformational leadership aims at developing the followers into leader describe my leadership style.

The preference for transformational leadership stems from the potential that the leadership style cultivates among followers. The ability to stimulate and develop high levels of personal commitment among the followers makes the leadership style a perfect fit for me. It is particularly in my interest to motivate and stimulate not only workplace commitment but also individual development among my followers.

Further, my ability to offer individualized consideration to my followers makes transformational leadership my style of leadership. I am empathetic to others and often offer support ensuring that these individuals find comfort and open communication channels with me. Even more is that I do appreciate and recognize individual contribution to a project, as well as offer intellectual stimulation and inspirational motivation. What is more is that most of my followers look up to me, and I work hard to ensure that they have a mentor and a model in my actions.

In developing transformational leadership, I hope to find opportunities in part-time jobs to develop this skill. Holiday jobs provide an opportunity to develop leadership skills and I believe that such places of work will offer the opportunity for the development of my leadership skills. I hope to work on the development through taking initiative. Thus, while it is normal for employers to distribute tasks, I hope to take this opportunity to take up more responsibilities, particularly those that I am confident that I can manage. Greater responsibilities offer an opportunity for learning, and as a transformational leader, learning is indeed part of the job. I hope that such opportunities will rise to give me more experience and knowledge.

At the job, I also hope to learn, especially on handling conflicts. Part of leadership, and in all styles leadership, is handling of conflicts. I, therefore, hope that this job will provide me with opportunities to learn how to handle conflicts, as well as how to develop discipline. As discipline is important in execution and achievement of goals for a leader, the job should provide me with adequate opportunities to develop leadership skills such as discipline, conflict handling, and motivation.

While practicing transformational leadership, I am aware of challenges, particularly using this approach. Transformational leadership is usually about making a case for change. It involves driving followers to change not only their methods of work but also the system. The challenge for the leader, therefore, lies in presenting a good case for the need to change. Convincing followers of the futility of the current system, and thus the need to change may present quite a challenge, especially when followers feel there is no need to effect such changes.

Further, transformational leadership is hinged upon a leader’s ability to inspire followers towards a specific vision for the organization. Such an inspiration may present quite a challenge to achieve. Inspiring employees into concerted effort, with a conviction that such actions have the potential to benefit everyone in the organization, may be challenging to the leader.

Implementing and making the change permanent are additional challenges. Thus, while it may be easy to inspire and motivate followers towards the change, effecting and sustaining the said changes can be an uphill task. What makes implementing the change challenging could be constantinfighting and reluctance among the followers towards the new changes. Some may, therefore, work to sabotage the whole change process.

While these challenges are real and may indeed hinder successful change for the transformational leader, they are surmountable. Giving a listening ear to the disgruntled followers offers an opportunity for the leader to overcome the challenge of infighting and sabotage. By listening and bringing such followers on board to the vision, the leader is able to create a unified team working towards the achievement of similar goals and objectives.

Offering support is yet another way of overcoming the inspiration problem. By offering support to the followers where necessary, especially with not only words but also action, followers are inspired to work towards the common vision. As a leader, therefore, the inspiration must also involve theprovision of resources, delivering on promises and being at the forefront of work (leading from the front).

Overcoming the challenges is not enough for the transformational leader, there is aneed to develop and improve some skills for my leadership to be effective. One of the most important skills to develop and improve is communication. Communication is imperative for a leader as it enable relaying of accurate and clear information, goals, direction and vision. Additionally, a transformational leader must be able to provide intellectual stimulation to keep followers yearning for more knowledge for both their professional and personal development. Further, the leader must develop the skill to develop and sustain relationships. This relationship should not only be between the leader and the followers, but also among the followers themselves.
