Learning and Innovation Skills and Student Assessment

Learning objectives

By the end of the lesson, the learner should be able to

  • Understand the process of solving word problems in mathematics
  • Site the interdisciplinary relationships between mathematics and other subjects
  • Work out advanced levels sums in mathematics
  • Cultivate an awareness and tolerance of different prospects dealing with the teaching and learning of mathematics.
  • Develop and understand what it takes to be a professional mathematician

Assessment performance level

  • The teacher will provide students with at least five word problem questions of different complexity and levels. They will be expected to read, understand, and comprehend the questions, and solve them accordingly to get the required answer.
  •  The students will calculate these sums within ten minutes. This short time for calculating five sums aims at testing the tolerance and appreciation levels of all students.
  • At the end of the last lesson of the week, students will act as the mathematics teacher of the day; they will come up with a lesson plan and teach other students their preferred topic that has already been covered in class. During this teaching task, the student should be able to demonstrate their understanding and mastery of mathematics as a profession.

While performing the above tasks, learners should be able to demonstrate concrete abilities to learn the content with ease. They should be able to come up with innovating ways of solving the problems provided to them. They should develop creative ideas of solving such problems in the most appropriate way.

Creativity and Innovative skills

While assessing creativity and innovation during the mathematics lesson, the lecturer expects that the learner should demonstrate creativity and innovation skills from three perspectives

  • The student should demonstrate ability to be a creative thinker. He or she should be able to come with a variety of techniques for creating ideas, such as brainstorming, deductive reasoning, experimenting, and researching.
  • The student should have the ability to examine, analyze, refresh, and evaluate ideas to increase their creative efforts (CCSS, 2014).
  • The student should be able to implement and use existing knowledge in coming up with creative ideas to facilitate teaching and learning.
  • The student should be able to communicate ideas to other students and teachers appropriately
  • The student must be able to understand that creativity and innovation takes time to perfect. He or she should also view failures as opportunities to rectify small mistakes (ALA, 2014)
  • The student should finally implement innovation by acting on creative ideas, which will be used in the professional area where creativity and innovations is paramount.

How the students will be assessed in the chosen area

  • They will be asked to operate mathematical sums of different complexities and at different levels.
  • Asked to work creatively with others
  • Asked to develop at least two creative ideas
  • Do a presentation using any technology to illustrate how they will implement and demonstrate their creative ideas (ISTES, 2014).

All schools and colleges must comply with the ISTES and CCSS standards in order to provide quality education. All the students in institutions of higher learning must be able to demonstrate different levels of understanding as per the stated academic requirements. Teachers and professors should also ensure that all these standards are met through assessment and evaluation of students’ work
