Introduction

In the aviation industry, the scheduled maintenance tasks are usually transcribed onto task cards. These cards are then utilized by the various maintenance personnel in carrying out duties or maintenances described therein. The task card comprises of the inspection standards for the aircraft. It gives clear guidelines that are vital in certification and the provision of instructions to the maintenance department  and the airline. The maintenance task cards also help in ensuring that previously assessed tasks are have been tackled as outlined in the task card. The maintenance task cards are therefore an important tool in the aviation industry as they help the maintenance staff to conform to the set standards. This paper aims at identifying the importance of the aviation task cards and their effects on aviation.  

Importance of the maintenance task cards to the maintenance department

The task cards are vital to the maintenance department as they act as a means of complying with the set regulations when performing their maintenance duties. This is because they provide elaborated, succinct procedural instructions that organize and check the activities being done by the maintenance team. availability of the maintenance task cards ensure that the personnel’s in the maintenance department comply with the maintenance manual through following the proper procedure outlined in the cards. To demonstrate this, an aircraft, during its normal operation may require unscheduled and extraordinary or non-routine maintenance like the restoration of a defective gadget. The unscheduled maintenance may arise from various sources including the scheduled maintenance outlined in the task card, pilots report among other causes. The maintenance task card contains aircraft maintenance manual, which can be used to rectify the issue.

With a task card, the maintenance department would be able to customize the maintenance program through task authoring. This would in essence create efficiency in the maintenance section as well as reducing the approval hours since the tasks are well highlighted in the task card. With a task card, it is possible to maintain the regulatory compliance through structuring the tasks (King, 1986 p. 150). This is important as it helps in reducing costly errors and the fines that could be imposed on noncompliance.

With a maintenance task card, it is possible to access specific information easier and quicker. This would increase the efficiency of the employees and improve manpower research since issues are recorded in the task waiting execution. The task card allows one to capture all the information required to make an aircraft return to service. This includes the serial numbers installed and removed, action taken after inspection, discrepancies and defects found among other issues (Fitzgerald, 2009). This is important to the maintenance people and the airline as it helps in the management of the aircrafts.   

Where several tasks are to be performed, the task card might be useful in giving instructions, the sequence of the work to be done and other details that pertain the task. This is beneficial to the maintenance staff as well as the airline as it would help them track the progress being made in the repair and maintenance of the aircrafts as well as the relevant person who ought to handle the maintenance.
