            Cultural norms refer to the behavior patterns and cues that are distinctive of specific groups. The cultural norms of nursing groups usually help nurses develop certain behavior that helps them perform their nursing work, especially in teams. These cultural norms mostly develop from what is expected of them in their nursing work. For example, nurses are required to provide care without any conscious bias. This helps them to reduce inequalities while providing care services. It enables those in the nursing profession to perform their work while maintaining impartiality. Maintaining confidentiality as a cultural norm is essential in the nursing profession as it enables nurses to protect the privacy of patients (Bosek & Savage, 2007, p. 104). It is also a cultural norm for nurses to be co-operative with other members of the therapeutic team to ensure provision of high quality care.

            The process of creating a positive work culture can start right from the recruiting stage. The recruitment team should ensure they recruit persons that exhibit positive attitudes towards others and the job they are to perform. Secondly, it can be created through providing the nurses a supportive environment to perform their duties. Thirdly, there should be open communication across all levels of the organization to increase transparency and trust among employees. Fourthly, the staff should develop great interpersonal skills that would ensure they provide one another necessary support and facilitate collaboration. Finally, the behavior and interaction among employees should be characterized by respect, especially for diversity.   

            A health care organization that trains its personnel on regular basis as part of its culture would empower them by providing them the essential skills that would result in delivery of quality care. The delivery of quality care is crucial in helping improve patient outcomes. Effective or open communication as an organizational culture is important in the dissemination of information that can help nurses provide appropriate care that will encourage the recovery of patients. Good leadership as an organizational culture can help nurses develop innovative ways of improving quality of nursing care, leading to improved patient outcomes.   

            A culture of open communication would encourage a patient to disclose all-important information, such as family history of the illness, which can improve their treatment outcomes. A peaceful or calm hospital climate can encourage patient recovery as they can have time to rest. Good ventilation can help reduce transmission of airborne diseases and maintenance of quality air that improves patient’s comfort and recovery (Atkinson et al., 2009, p. 19)

            A culture of taking precautionary measures can help reduce risks in the hospital environment, thus improve nurses’ safety. Providing appropriate protective gears or tools can also improve the nurses’ safety while performing their roles. A supportive environment, such as teamwork, can help improve nurses’ safety, as people will contribute in accordance to their expertise.    

            The culture of learning is highly valuable as it ensures nurses are up-to-date with the current developments in the nursing profession. This can help gain important skills that would not only enable them to provide quality care, but also to be promoted to other senior positions for them to attain self-actualization.

            The statement that “We’ve always done it that way,” shows that the person is resisting attempts to perform duties in new ways. Such individuals may resist any attempts to implement organizational change that is meant to benefit the organization and its employees. The statement that “The challenges of leadership belong to every nurse, not just those in administrative or management roles,” implies that everyone has a responsibility to address such challenges. They affect everyone in one way or another.  

            Nurse leaders influence culture through how they treat the subordinate nurses. Treating them with respect will help create a positive work culture. The leaders’ ability to provide nurses the required support in performing their tasks, such as all appropriate information and work tools, is crucial to creation of desirable or motivating climate for accomplishing tasks successfully.

            Nurses have for years dressed professionally. They wear uniforms that are very clean, well pressed, well-fitting, and wear minimum jewelry. This signifies that they are capable of maintaining and promoting proper hygiene that can improve their health status, and that of other people they interact with (Rosdahl & Kowalski, 2008, p. 16). Nurses also show high level of courtesy to patients’ families they interact with. This helps create a good working relationship with them, as it can significantly improve patient outcomes through sharing of information crucial to patient recovery.

            Nurses’ parking facilities and lounges are not as good as those of physicians and administrators. This signifies nurses have a lower status. Nurses from the same cultural background easily establish friendship with each other because they share most of the cultural values, beliefs, and identities. Their work environment is comfortable and appealing as it is quite spacious and well-designed.  The rooms and facilities have modern décor that makes their working environment as comfortable as possible.  The chief executive officer (CEO) communicates to staff nurses through e-mails and memos. The formal and informal communication networks are very effective, with each of them complementing the inadequacies of the other.

The organization’s committee is comprised of experts from various organizational departments. It is chaired by the CEO, and the committee members are drawn from all the stakeholder groups involves. This includes the management team, subordinate nurses, and the supporting staff. These committee members are appointed by the stakeholder groups they represent. Holidays are celebrated through exchanging gifts and participating in volunteer activities to help the needy in the society. The longest serving employees are usually rewarded and awarded. The events celebrated and recognized include national holidays, the organization’s founding day, and end of year party. The heroes and heroines are employees that at one time or another transformed the organization to higher statuses. They also include persons that have tremendous positive influence on all stakeholders involved with the organization. The organization has no taboo subjects because it embraces open communication as an organizational culture.
