Interview as a method of data collection focuses on what the respondent says to the interviewer on a specific problem, with the main agenda of the interviewer being to understand challenges faced by a particular society in order to provide practical solutions. The following are different types of interviews you can utilize when you write a research paper.

a)      Standardized interviews– respondents are given a set of answers from which they should select the most suitable. It has an aspect of questionnaires.

b)     Unstandardized interview– the respondent has the liberty to give as little or as much information as he/she can. It is however, the responsibility of the interviewer to make sure that the respondent gives enough and relevant information to write a research paper successfully.

c)      Group interview– the interviewer conducts the interview on more than one respondent simultaneously. The group is made up of a minimum of two respondents.Image 2

d)     Individual interview– the respondent conducts the interview on one respondent at a time.

e)      Personal interviews– this involves having a face-to-face ‘question and answer’ session with the respondent.

f)       Non-personal interviews– although the interviewer asks the respondent questions directly and gets answers suitable to write a research paper directly, the two do not meet. Data collection is done through phone calls, internet etc.

Requirements of a successful interview

The following preconditions are necessary if one is to conduct an interview that will give adequate, reliable and credible results useful to write a research paper.

a)      Accessibility– the interviewer must access relevant information from the respondent or the interviewee.

b)     Understanding– it is the responsibility of the researcher to help the respondent understand why he/she has to write a research paper, the significance of the research and what kind of answers he/she expects.

c)      Motivation– the respondent need to be motivated to give accurate information without fear of consequences, being suspicious on the research and should be assisted in developing a positive attitude in case of disliking the subject.
